11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 817
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the members of the Williams-Livingston family on the
44 grand occasion of their family reunion, which is being held
55 June 5 through 7, 2015, in Kirvin; and
66 WHEREAS, Every year on the first Saturday in June, members
77 of the Williams-Livingston family hold a reunion to celebrate
88 their heritage and to commemorate the birth of Mamie Elizabeth
99 "Mama Mae" Williams; they invite friends from across Texas and
1010 the United States and share their celebration of family love and
1111 unity, religious roots, and community; and
1212 WHEREAS, Family history reveals that the Charles Livingston
1313 family moved from Virginia as freed slaves and arrived in the
1414 Freestone County area in the early 1800s; the family settled in
1515 the area known as Cotton Gin and sharecropped on various local
1616 farms; and
1717 WHEREAS, Caroline Livingston's family moved from Alabama
1818 to Kirvin in Freestone County, arriving in covered wagons, on
1919 foot, and on horseback; they settled on the Alfred Carter farm
2020 and worked his land; and
2121 WHEREAS, Caroline and Charles Livingston's children, Elbert
2222 Jefferson, Fannie, Foster, Elizabeth, and Callie, supported their
2323 community and were instrumental in establishing Woods Chapel
2424 Primitive Baptist Church, which is still an active church today;
2525 they also helped create a public school system for their children
2626 and for the children from surrounding communities; and
2727 WHEREAS, The members of the Williams-Livingston family who
2828 host the annual reunion are the descendants of Caroline and
2929 Charles Livingston's daughter Elizabeth Livingston; born July 2,
3030 1866, she married Austin Williams, a freed slave from Tennessee,
3131 and the couple had 10 children, one of whom was Mamie Elizabeth
3232 "Mama Mae" Williams, who was born June 1, 1889; and
3333 WHEREAS, Over the course of her long life, Mamie Elizabeth
3434 "Mama Mae" Williams became the matriarch of the Williams-Livingston
3535 family; she died in 1987 at the age of 98; one of her children,
3636 Cathelyn Francis Dawson Butcher, carries on as her living legacy; and
3737 WHEREAS, Other strong women who continue to fulfill the
3838 traditional role of family matriarch are Ethelyn DeLon Washington
3939 Oliver, Patricia Butcher Barton, Thelma Mae Butcher Johnson,
4040 Evelyn Butcher Smith, Seri Butcher Nolan, Dianne Pelton Hooper,
4141 and Ursla Howard; the patriarch of the family is Johnnie Franklin
4242 Carter, with Charles Barton, Robert Powers, Larry Pelton, and
4343 Gary Pelton sharing their wisdom and support; Joe Rogers, Kenneth
4444 Payne, Joe Fletcher, David Hill, and Archie Pelton Jr. also
4545 unselfishly serve the family; and
4646 WHEREAS, The branch of the family extending from Mama Mae
4747 has successfully worked to reconnect with other branches of the
4848 family from across the state and nation, and today, more new
4949 family members attend each reunion; and
5050 WHEREAS, Williams-Livingston family members are successful
5151 men and women who have contributed greatly to their communities
5252 though their leadership, their professionalism and entrepreneurial
5353 spirit, and their concern for others; they are exemplary citizens
5454 who believe strongly in tradition and who instill in their
5555 children the values of love, family, and hard work; and
5656 WHEREAS, The annual Williams-Livingston reunion is the
5757 manifestation of the family's belief in unity, loyalty, and pride
5858 in one's heritage; and
5959 WHEREAS, Each year a family member is selected as the recipient
6060 of the Mamie Williams Humanitarian Award and recognized at the
6161 reunion for unselfish commitment to the furtherance of the family's
6262 core values; and
6363 WHEREAS, Children and young people are also recognized at
6464 the reunion for their academic and athletic accomplishments, and
6565 the family also recognizes the wedding anniversaries, employment
6666 anniversaries and honors, and births and deaths of family members;
6767 now, therefore, be it
6868 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
6969 Legislature, hereby extend to the members of the Williams-Livingston
7070 family best wishes for a joyous and memorable family reunion and
7171 recognize June 6, 2015, as Williams-Livingston Day in this state;
7272 and, be it further
7373 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
7474 the family as a memento of this special occasion.
