SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 823 In Memory of Melvin Vernell Greene WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates the life of the late Melvin Vernell Greene; and WHEREAS, Mel Greene was born on August 3, 1948, in Greenville, Mississippi, the seventh child of Evangeline and William Greene; he graduated from Coleman High School in Greenville; and WHEREAS, He placed his college plans on hold when he was drafted into the United States Army in 1968; he served with distinction in Vietnam, rising to the rank of sergeant and receiving numerous citations and awards, including the Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; and WHEREAS, After his military service, he entered Mississippi Valley State College and earned a bachelor's degree in public administration; he enjoyed a long and productive career as an executive with a number of companies, beginning with Sears Roebuck and Company and including such noted firms as Xerox, Dell Computers, and the Seton Family of Hospitals; lastly, he served as director of Diversity for Vidant Health; and WHEREAS, Mr. Greene was active in a variety of professional and civic organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, the Professional Retail Organization of Black Executives, Goodwill Industries of Central Texas, and Skillpoint Alliance; and WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced his faith in daily life, Mr. Greene was active in congregations wherever he lived, serving through the years in such ministries as Boys' Rites of Passage, Veterans Recognition, and Sanctuary Choir; he was an active member of Greater Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Austin; and WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and integrity, he gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, his thirst for knowledge, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten; and WHEREAS, He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Melvin Vernell Greene; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Melvin Greene.
