44 Melvin Vernell Greene
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of the late Melvin Vernell Greene; and
77 WHEREAS, Mel Greene was born on August 3, 1948, in
88 Greenville, Mississippi, the seventh child of Evangeline and
99 William Greene; he graduated from Coleman High School in
1010 Greenville; and
1111 WHEREAS, He placed his college plans on hold when he was
1212 drafted into the United States Army in 1968; he served with
1313 distinction in Vietnam, rising to the rank of sergeant and
1414 receiving numerous citations and awards, including the Bronze
1515 Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation
1616 Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; and
1717 WHEREAS, After his military service, he entered
1818 Mississippi Valley State College and earned a bachelor's degree
1919 in public administration; he enjoyed a long and productive career
2020 as an executive with a number of companies, beginning with Sears
2121 Roebuck and Company and including such noted firms as Xerox, Dell
2222 Computers, and the Seton Family of Hospitals; lastly, he served
2323 as director of Diversity for Vidant Health; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mr. Greene was active in a variety of professional
2525 and civic organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, the
2626 Professional Retail Organization of Black Executives, Goodwill
2727 Industries of Central Texas, and Skillpoint Alliance; and
2828 WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced his faith in
2929 daily life, Mr. Greene was active in congregations wherever he
3030 lived, serving through the years in such ministries as Boys'
3131 Rites of Passage, Veterans Recognition, and Sanctuary Choir; he
3232 was an active member of Greater Mount Zion Missionary Baptist
3333 Church in Austin; and
3434 WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and integrity, he gave
3535 unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, his thirst for knowledge,
3636 and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
3737 forgotten; and
3838 WHEREAS, He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and
3939 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
4040 forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore,
4141 be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4343 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4444 family of Melvin Vernell Greene; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4646 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4747 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4848 memory of Melvin Greene.
