5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of the late Melvin Vernell Greene; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Mel Greene was born on August 3, 1948, in |
---|
8 | 8 | | Greenville, Mississippi, the seventh child of Evangeline and |
---|
9 | 9 | | William Greene; he graduated from Coleman High School in |
---|
10 | 10 | | Greenville; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, He placed his college plans on hold when he was |
---|
12 | 12 | | drafted into the United States Army in 1968; he served with |
---|
13 | 13 | | distinction in Vietnam, rising to the rank of sergeant and |
---|
14 | 14 | | receiving numerous citations and awards, including the Bronze |
---|
15 | 15 | | Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation |
---|
16 | 16 | | Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, After his military service, he entered |
---|
18 | 18 | | Mississippi Valley State College and earned a bachelor's degree |
---|
19 | 19 | | in public administration; he enjoyed a long and productive career |
---|
20 | 20 | | as an executive with a number of companies, beginning with Sears |
---|
21 | 21 | | Roebuck and Company and including such noted firms as Xerox, Dell |
---|
22 | 22 | | Computers, and the Seton Family of Hospitals; lastly, he served |
---|
23 | 23 | | as director of Diversity for Vidant Health; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Greene was active in a variety of professional |
---|
25 | 25 | | and civic organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, the |
---|
26 | 26 | | Professional Retail Organization of Black Executives, Goodwill |
---|
27 | 27 | | Industries of Central Texas, and Skillpoint Alliance; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced his faith in |
---|
29 | 29 | | daily life, Mr. Greene was active in congregations wherever he |
---|
30 | 30 | | lived, serving through the years in such ministries as Boys' |
---|
31 | 31 | | Rites of Passage, Veterans Recognition, and Sanctuary Choir; he |
---|
32 | 32 | | was an active member of Greater Mount Zion Missionary Baptist |
---|
33 | 33 | | Church in Austin; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and integrity, he gave |
---|
35 | 35 | | unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, his thirst for knowledge, |
---|
36 | 36 | | and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be |
---|
37 | 37 | | forgotten; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and |
---|
39 | 39 | | grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured |
---|
40 | 40 | | forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore, |
---|
41 | 41 | | be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
44 | 44 | | family of Melvin Vernell Greene; and, be it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
46 | 46 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
48 | 48 | | memory of Melvin Greene. |
