11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 824
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is designating
33 the month of May 2015 as Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month in
44 Texas; and
55 WHEREAS, Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting
66 approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States and
77 nearly 70,000 children and adults worldwide; more than 1,700
88 people with cystic fibrosis live in this state; and
99 WHEREAS, Cystic fibrosis is the result of a defective gene
1010 that causes the body to produce an abnormal mucus that clogs the
1111 lungs, and these secretions produce life-threatening lung
1212 infections and obstruct the pancreas; and
1313 WHEREAS, More than 10 million Americans are symptomless
1414 carriers of the defective gene, and cystic fibrosis occurs in
1515 approximately one of every 3,500 live births in the United
1616 States; the median age of survival for a person with cystic
1717 fibrosis is 41 years; and
1818 WHEREAS, With advances in the treatment of the illness, the
1919 number of adults with cystic fibrosis has steadily grown, and
2020 approximately 1,000 new cases are diagnosed each year; and
2121 WHEREAS, Infant blood-screening to detect genetic defects
2222 is the most reliable and least costly method to identify persons
2323 likely to have cystic fibrosis; and
2424 WHEREAS, Early diagnosis permits early treatment and
2525 enhances the quality of life and longevity, and the treatment of
2626 cystic fibrosis depends on the stage of the disease and the
2727 organs involved; and
2828 WHEREAS, There are 11 world-class treatment centers in
2929 this state which specialize in the diagnosis and the care of
3030 persons with cystic fibrosis; and
3131 WHEREAS, A critical component of treating patients with
3232 cystic fibrosis is ensuring access to those innovative
3333 treatments that can play a crucial role in the lives of patients;
3434 improving the length and quality of life for people with the
3535 illness starts with awareness; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3737 Legislature, hereby proclaim the month of May 2015 Cystic
3838 Fibrosis Awareness Month in Texas; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to
4040 promote awareness of this disease.
