1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 824
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is designating
3	3	the month of May 2015 as Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month in
4	4	Texas; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting
6	6	approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States and
7	7	nearly 70,000 children and adults worldwide; more than 1,700
8	8	people with cystic fibrosis live in this state; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Cystic fibrosis is the result of a defective gene
10	10	that causes the body to produce an abnormal mucus that clogs the
11	11	lungs, and these secretions produce life-threatening lung
12	12	infections and obstruct the pancreas; and
13	13	WHEREAS, More than 10 million Americans are symptomless
14	14	carriers of the defective gene, and cystic fibrosis occurs in
15	15	approximately one of every 3,500 live births in the United
16	16	States; the median age of survival for a person with cystic
17	17	fibrosis is 41 years; and
18	18	WHEREAS, With advances in the treatment of the illness, the
19	19	number of adults with cystic fibrosis has steadily grown, and
20	20	approximately 1,000 new cases are diagnosed each year; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Infant blood-screening to detect genetic defects
22	22	is the most reliable and least costly method to identify persons
23	23	likely to have cystic fibrosis; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Early diagnosis permits early treatment and
25	25	enhances the quality of life and longevity, and the treatment of
26	26	cystic fibrosis depends on the stage of the disease and the
27	27	organs involved; and
28	28	WHEREAS, There are 11 world-class treatment centers in
29	29	this state which specialize in the diagnosis and the care of
30	30	persons with cystic fibrosis; and
31	31	WHEREAS, A critical component of treating patients with
32	32	cystic fibrosis is ensuring access to those innovative
33	33	treatments that can play a crucial role in the lives of patients;
34	34	improving the length and quality of life for people with the
35	35	illness starts with awareness; now, therefore, be it
36	36	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
37	37	Legislature, hereby proclaim the month of May 2015 Cystic
38	38	Fibrosis Awareness Month in Texas; and, be it further
39	39	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to
40	40	promote awareness of this disease.
