11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 837
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Mary E. Lester on the occasion of her 2015 induction
44 into the African American Educators Hall of Fame; and
55 WHEREAS, A leader in the field of mathematics instruction,
66 Mary Lester served as the director of mathematics for the Dallas
77 Independent School District from 1974 to 1997; she was the first
88 African American to serve as a director in a major school district in
99 Texas; and
1010 WHEREAS, As the mathematics director, she developed and
1111 implemented innovative curriculums and computer-based instruction
1212 programs, introduced computer-programming classes for elementary
1313 school children, and implemented mathematics competitions that
1414 offered college scholarships to students; and
1515 WHEREAS, Mary Lester fostered positive and successful
1616 learning environments that helped equip students throughout the
1717 district with the tools that are needed for continued academic
1818 success; she has been a respected and admired educational
1919 administrator, and it is truly fitting that she be recognized for
2020 her accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
2121 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
2222 Legislature, hereby commend Mary E. Lester on her commitment to
2323 excellence in education and extend congratulations to her on her
2424 2015 induction into the African American Educators Hall of Fame;
2525 and, be it further
2626 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2727 her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
