| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Academic Language Therapy Association |

| 3 | 3 | | are gathering at the State Capitol on February 4, 2015, to |

| 4 | 4 | | commemorate Dyslexia Awareness Day; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1986 and headquartered in Dallas, |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | the Academic Language Therapy Association is a national |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | organization that includes licensed dyslexia therapists and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | practitioners as well as parents and educators of students |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | identified with dyslexia; the group is dedicated to the mission |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | of helping to provide high quality services for students with |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | dyslexia and related disorders; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, One in five students has a language-based disability, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and dyslexia is the most common of these disabilities; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, A joint study by the Texas Department of Criminal |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Justice and The University of Texas Medical Branch in 2000 found |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | that 48 percent of the Texas prison population was identified |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | with dyslexia; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The 2014 Public Education Information Management |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | System data indicates that public school district identification |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | of students with dyslexia varies across Texas from 16.69 percent |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | in some schools to 0.21 percent in others; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, These findings demonstrate that language therapy |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | for individuals with dyslexia is crucial; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The Academic Language Therapy Association and its |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Texas chapter are making a positive and lasting difference in the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | lives of many young Texans, and the association indeed merits |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | special commendation; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 4, 2015, as Dyslexia |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Awareness Day at the State Capitol and honor the members of the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Academic Language Therapy Association and its Texas chapter for |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | their efforts and achievements; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |

|---|
