55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life and legacy of Annie Mae Charles, who died
77 April 28, 2015, at the age of 102; and
88 WHEREAS, Annie Mae Charles was a leading Galveston citizen
99 who had a profound influence on her community and state and was
1010 well known for her activism, her strength of character, and her
1111 commitment to justice; and
1212 WHEREAS, Annie Mae was born April 16, 1913; she was the
1313 first African American woman to serve as a police officer in
1414 Galveston, and the city's police department honored her at her
1515 100th birthday celebration with a special plaque containing her
1616 original police certification and photograph; that birthday
1717 celebration, which was attended by over 1,500 people, also
1818 included a taped message from President Barack Obama and a phone
1919 call from her favorite politician, Al Sharpton; and
2020 WHEREAS, She was an active participant in a wide range of
2121 local and statewide organizations, including Zeta Amicae and the
2222 Texas Usher Board Association; she served two terms as president
2323 of the Galveston Branch of the National Association for the
2424 Advancement of Colored People; and
2525 WHEREAS, She was instrumental in organizing the first
2626 Juneteenth celebration in Galveston in 1980, and Muhammad Ali
2727 served as its first grand marshal; the city has since named the
2828 festivities the Annie Mae Charles Juneteenth Celebration in her
2929 honor; and
3030 WHEREAS, Her activism and leadership in the local
3131 political scene were central to the success of numerous
3232 campaigns, and beginning in 1955, every newly elected mayor of
3333 Galveston held an inaugural breakfast at her home; in recognition
3434 of her status as a community leader, the Galveston Historical
3535 Foundation has designated her home a historical landmark; in
3636 addition, 39th and Broadway was renamed Annie Mae Charles
3737 Boulevard; and
3838 WHEREAS, A woman of courage and compassion, she gave
3939 generously to others, and her wisdom, her indomitable spirit, and
4040 her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
4141 forgotten; and
4242 WHEREAS, She was devoted to her family, and she leaves
4343 behind memories that will be cherished forever by those who were
4444 privileged to share in her life; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4646 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4747 family of Annie Mae Charles; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4949 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5050 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5151 memory of Annie Mae Charles.
