44 William B. Wilkerson
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of William B. Wilkerson,
77 who died April 30, 2015, at the age of 86; and
88 WHEREAS, Bill Wilkerson was born April 12, 1929, to James
99 and Alma Wilkerson; he became a second-generation newspaperman
1010 at the young age of eight by serving as a printer's devil at the
1111 Comanche Chief, where his father was publisher and owner; and
1212 WHEREAS, He met Judith Blanton while a student at The
1313 University of Texas at Austin, and they married in 1950; he
1414 graduated the following year and joined the United States Air
1515 Force, and he served with distinction at Floyd Bennett Field in
1616 New York during the Korean Conflict; and
1717 WHEREAS, Mr. Wilkerson returned to Texas and served as
1818 editor of the Comanche Chief for 18 years; in 1974, he and his
1919 wife bought the Pleasanton Express, and under his watchful eye,
2020 the paper became an award-winning publication; the couple
2121 remained on as owners and publishers of the paper when they moved
2222 to Austin in 1989; and
2323 WHEREAS, Distinguished leaders in the newspaper business,
2424 Mr. and Mrs. Wilkerson were the youngest members to join the
2525 South Texas Press Association and over time, they became the
2626 oldest couple to attend its conventions; Mr. Wilkerson also
2727 served as a board member of the Texas Press Association for many
2828 years; in Austin, he immersed himself in the local culture and
2929 was an avid Longhorn fan; and
3030 WHEREAS, Bill Wilkerson had a larger-than-life personality
3131 and was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; he
3232 was devoted to his wife and was known for his boundless
3333 generosity and he will long be remembered with affection and
3434 admiration by all who were privileged to share in his life; now,
3535 therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3737 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3838 family of William B. Wilkerson; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4040 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4141 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4242 memory of Bill Wilkerson.
