5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of William B. Wilkerson, |
---|
7 | 7 | | who died April 30, 2015, at the age of 86; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Bill Wilkerson was born April 12, 1929, to James |
---|
9 | 9 | | and Alma Wilkerson; he became a second-generation newspaperman |
---|
10 | 10 | | at the young age of eight by serving as a printer's devil at the |
---|
11 | 11 | | Comanche Chief, where his father was publisher and owner; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, He met Judith Blanton while a student at The |
---|
13 | 13 | | University of Texas at Austin, and they married in 1950; he |
---|
14 | 14 | | graduated the following year and joined the United States Air |
---|
15 | 15 | | Force, and he served with distinction at Floyd Bennett Field in |
---|
16 | 16 | | New York during the Korean Conflict; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Wilkerson returned to Texas and served as |
---|
18 | 18 | | editor of the Comanche Chief for 18 years; in 1974, he and his |
---|
19 | 19 | | wife bought the Pleasanton Express, and under his watchful eye, |
---|
20 | 20 | | the paper became an award-winning publication; the couple |
---|
21 | 21 | | remained on as owners and publishers of the paper when they moved |
---|
22 | 22 | | to Austin in 1989; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Distinguished leaders in the newspaper business, |
---|
24 | 24 | | Mr. and Mrs. Wilkerson were the youngest members to join the |
---|
25 | 25 | | South Texas Press Association and over time, they became the |
---|
26 | 26 | | oldest couple to attend its conventions; Mr. Wilkerson also |
---|
27 | 27 | | served as a board member of the Texas Press Association for many |
---|
28 | 28 | | years; in Austin, he immersed himself in the local culture and |
---|
29 | 29 | | was an avid Longhorn fan; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Bill Wilkerson had a larger-than-life personality |
---|
31 | 31 | | and was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; he |
---|
32 | 32 | | was devoted to his wife and was known for his boundless |
---|
33 | 33 | | generosity and he will long be remembered with affection and |
---|
34 | 34 | | admiration by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, |
---|
35 | 35 | | therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
38 | 38 | | family of William B. Wilkerson; and, be it further |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
40 | 40 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
42 | 42 | | memory of Bill Wilkerson. |
