11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 94
22 WHEREAS, Many proud residents of Bee County are gathering
33 at the State Capitol to celebrate Bee County Day on February 10,
44 2015; and
55 WHEREAS, Artifacts indicate that the region was originally
66 inhabited 6,000 to 10,000 years ago; the first permanent European
77 settlers arrived in the early 19th century, and 11 area
88 landowners were among the signers of the Texas Declaration of
99 Independence; and
1010 WHEREAS, Bee County was officially organized on January 25,
1111 1858, and named for Barnard E. Bee Sr., a South Carolina
1212 attorney, soldier, and statesman who joined the Army of the
1313 Republic of Texas and served as secretary of war under Sam
1414 Houston; and
1515 WHEREAS, Located in the South Texas Plains vegetation
1616 region, the county covers 866 square miles that slope gently
1717 toward the Gulf Coast; with the region's open expanses of
1818 grasslands, its economy is dominated by farming and ranching
1919 along with oil and gas operations and agribusiness; Beeville is
2020 the county seat, and other towns in the county include Skidmore,
2121 Blue Berry Hill, Pettus, Tuleta, Tynan, Pawnee, Normanna, and
2222 Mineral; and
2323 WHEREAS, Bee County is blessed with an array of cultural
2424 and historical attractions for residents and visitors to
2525 explore; Beeville has successfully revitalized its downtown
2626 district and has been named a Texas Main Street City by the Texas
2727 Historical Commission; Coastal Bend College--Beeville offers
2828 occupational as well as academic classes for its students, and it
2929 has the oldest academic educational glassblowing facility in the
3030 state; art enthusiasts may delight in the exhibits of the
3131 Beeville Art Museum, which is funded by the Joe Barnhart
3232 Foundation and housed in the historic Esther Barnhart House; in
3333 addition, visitors come from all across Texas to celebrate the
3434 state's rich traditions at Western Week, one of the county's
3535 largest and longest-running festivals; and
3636 WHEREAS, The residents of Bee County may take great pride
3737 in their heritage and contributions to the Lone Star State, and
3838 it is indeed appropriate to pay tribute to the county and its
3939 citizens on this special day; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4141 Legislature, hereby recognize February 10, 2015, as Bee County
4242 Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
4343 sincere best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin.
