1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 947
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize the Honorable Ralph M. Hall for his outstanding service
4	4	to his community and to this state and nation; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Ralph Hall was born in Fate, Texas, a small town
6	6	in Rockwall County; in 1942, he joined the United States Navy,
7	7	and he served with distinction as an aircraft carrier pilot
8	8	during World War II; after the war, he earned a degree in law from
9	9	Southern Methodist University; and
10	10	WHEREAS, He maintained a successful law practice in Rockwall
11	11	for many years and was a highly successful business leader in the
12	12	community; he was a founder of Lakeside National Bank, and he
13	13	continues to serve as chair of the institution today; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Mr. Hall's career in public service began at the
15	15	urging of his wife, Mary Ellen Murphy, and in 1950, he became the
16	16	Rockwall County Judge and was the youngest county judge in the
17	17	state; he went on to serve as a Texas State Senator for nine
18	18	years; and
19	19	WHEREAS, In 1980, Mr. Hall was elected to the United States
20	20	House of Representatives; throughout his 34 years in Congress, he
21	21	served as a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and
22	22	Technology; during his tenure, he promoted science, technology,
23	23	engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in education and worked to
24	24	ensure America's place as a leader in research, development, and
25	25	space exploration; he was named chairman of the committee in
26	26	2011; and
27	27	WHEREAS, In November of 2012, Congressman Hall became the
28	28	oldest member in the House of Representatives to ever cast a
29	29	vote, and the following month, he became the oldest member in
30	30	recorded history to have served in the House; he remained
31	31	dedicated to his constituents throughout his years of service and
32	32	earned a reputation for excellence among his colleagues on
33	33	Capitol Hill; and
34	34	WHEREAS, A loving family man, Ralph Hall shared 64 years of
35	35	marriage with the late Mary Ellen Murphy, who was a source of
36	36	strength and support throughout their years together; they were
37	37	blessed with three sons, Hampton, Brett, and Blakeley, and five
38	38	grandchildren, who are a source of immense pride and joy; and
39	39	WHEREAS, Representative Hall concluded his tenure in the
40	40	House of Representatives in January of 2015; he was held in the
41	41	highest respect by his constituents throughout his distinguished
42	42	career, and his impressive legacy of service in the nation's
43	43	Capitol will remain a source of inspiration for future generations
44	44	of leaders; now, therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
46	46	Legislature, hereby commend the Honorable Ralph M. Hall for his
47	47	exemplary life of service and his invaluable contributions to the
48	48	state and the nation and extend to him best wishes for the future;
49	49	and, be it further
50	50	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
51	51	him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
