11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 947
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the Honorable Ralph M. Hall for his outstanding service
44 to his community and to this state and nation; and
55 WHEREAS, Ralph Hall was born in Fate, Texas, a small town
66 in Rockwall County; in 1942, he joined the United States Navy,
77 and he served with distinction as an aircraft carrier pilot
88 during World War II; after the war, he earned a degree in law from
99 Southern Methodist University; and
1010 WHEREAS, He maintained a successful law practice in Rockwall
1111 for many years and was a highly successful business leader in the
1212 community; he was a founder of Lakeside National Bank, and he
1313 continues to serve as chair of the institution today; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Hall's career in public service began at the
1515 urging of his wife, Mary Ellen Murphy, and in 1950, he became the
1616 Rockwall County Judge and was the youngest county judge in the
1717 state; he went on to serve as a Texas State Senator for nine
1818 years; and
1919 WHEREAS, In 1980, Mr. Hall was elected to the United States
2020 House of Representatives; throughout his 34 years in Congress, he
2121 served as a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and
2222 Technology; during his tenure, he promoted science, technology,
2323 engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in education and worked to
2424 ensure America's place as a leader in research, development, and
2525 space exploration; he was named chairman of the committee in
2626 2011; and
2727 WHEREAS, In November of 2012, Congressman Hall became the
2828 oldest member in the House of Representatives to ever cast a
2929 vote, and the following month, he became the oldest member in
3030 recorded history to have served in the House; he remained
3131 dedicated to his constituents throughout his years of service and
3232 earned a reputation for excellence among his colleagues on
3333 Capitol Hill; and
3434 WHEREAS, A loving family man, Ralph Hall shared 64 years of
3535 marriage with the late Mary Ellen Murphy, who was a source of
3636 strength and support throughout their years together; they were
3737 blessed with three sons, Hampton, Brett, and Blakeley, and five
3838 grandchildren, who are a source of immense pride and joy; and
3939 WHEREAS, Representative Hall concluded his tenure in the
4040 House of Representatives in January of 2015; he was held in the
4141 highest respect by his constituents throughout his distinguished
4242 career, and his impressive legacy of service in the nation's
4343 Capitol will remain a source of inspiration for future generations
4444 of leaders; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4646 Legislature, hereby commend the Honorable Ralph M. Hall for his
4747 exemplary life of service and his invaluable contributions to the
4848 state and the nation and extend to him best wishes for the future;
4949 and, be it further
5050 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5151 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
