55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens
66 across the state in mourning the loss of beloved fiddler John
77 Paul Gimble, who died May 9, 2015, at the age of 88; and
88 WHEREAS, Johnny Gimble was born in Tyler on May 30, 1926;
99 inspired by his uncles' musical talent, he began playing fiddle
1010 at age 10, and within two years he was performing with his
1111 brothers in his first band, the Rose City Swingsters; and
1212 WHEREAS, His legendary music career took off in 1949, when
1313 he began playing fiddle and electric mandolin for Bob Wills'
1414 Texas Playboys, a renowned western swing band; he left Texas in
1515 1968 to join the Nashville music scene and found success as a
1616 session musician and as a regular on the famed television series
1717 Hee Haw; and
1818 WHEREAS, His love for Texas eventually drew him back to his
1919 home state, and in the ensuing years he worked with such greats
2020 as Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson; his extraordinary talent was
2121 brought to the big screen in films like Honkytonk Man and
2222 Honeysuckle Rose; and
2323 WHEREAS, Between 1975 and 1990, Johnny won a total of 14
2424 Musician of the Year awards, and his timeless talent was woven
2525 into modern country music through his work with stars, such as
2626 Carrie Underwood, Vince Gill, and Ray Benson of Asleep at the
2727 Wheel; and
2828 WHEREAS, Johnny Gimble was a treasured son of the Lone Star
2929 State, and he and his musical legacy will live on in the hearts of
3030 his countless fans and loved ones; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3232 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3333 family of John Paul Gimble; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3535 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3636 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
3737 memory of Johnny Gimble.
