11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 980
22 WHEREAS, The United States is facing a growing obesity
33 epidemic that affects the health and quality of life of millions
44 of citizens; and
55 WHEREAS, More than a third of all American adults are obese,
66 and the rate of childhood obesity has nearly tripled over the past
77 quarter-century; these alarming findings are disproportionately
88 reflected in certain racial and ethnic minority groups, especially
99 those from low-income households; and
1010 WHEREAS, Obesity increases the risk of numerous medical
1111 conditions, including heart disease, stroke, high blood
1212 pressure, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and other chronic
1313 diseases, and approximately 300,000 deaths per year may be
1414 attributable to the condition; and
1515 WHEREAS, The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in
1616 the United States is almost $150 billion; in Texas alone, obesity
1717 costs businesses about $10 billion each year, and that number is
1818 projected to triple by 2030 if we do not take action; and
1919 WHEREAS, Many concerned citizens are involved in the fight
2020 against obesity, and through their efforts, they are helping to
2121 ensure a healthier future for all Texans; now, therefore, be it
2222 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
2323 Legislature, hereby commend all those who contribute to the
2424 development of weight management programs designed to prevent
2525 and treat obesity.
