| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The United States is facing a growing obesity |

| 3 | 3 | | epidemic that affects the health and quality of life of millions |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | of citizens; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, More than a third of all American adults are obese, |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | and the rate of childhood obesity has nearly tripled over the past |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | quarter-century; these alarming findings are disproportionately |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | reflected in certain racial and ethnic minority groups, especially |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | those from low-income households; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Obesity increases the risk of numerous medical |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | conditions, including heart disease, stroke, high blood |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | pressure, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and other chronic |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | diseases, and approximately 300,000 deaths per year may be |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | attributable to the condition; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the United States is almost $150 billion; in Texas alone, obesity |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | costs businesses about $10 billion each year, and that number is |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | projected to triple by 2030 if we do not take action; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Many concerned citizens are involved in the fight |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | against obesity, and through their efforts, they are helping to |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | ensure a healthier future for all Texans; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Legislature, hereby commend all those who contribute to the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | development of weight management programs designed to prevent |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and treat obesity. |
