2	2	WHEREAS, John Wayne is the prototypical American hero,
3	3	symbolizing such traits as self-reliance, grace under pressure,
4	4	resolve, and patriotism; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Born Marion Robert Morrison on May 26, 1907, in
6	6	Winterset, Iowa, he moved with his parents as a young boy to
7	7	California; in 1916, while the family was living in Glendale, he
8	8	began going by "Duke," a nickname that followed him throughout
9	9	his life; and
10	10	WHEREAS, In 1925, he began attending the University of
11	11	Southern California on a football scholarship, playing offensive
12	12	lineman; after breaking his collarbone in a surfing accident
13	13	before his junior year, he withdrew from the university and began
14	14	working at Fox Film Corporation as a laborer moving set props and
15	15	as an occasional extra in movies; and
16	16	WHEREAS, While working at the studio, he met Wyatt Earp, who
17	17	was a consultant to Western film director John Ford, and he would
18	18	adopt some of Earp's mannerisms for his roles as a cowboy; and
19	19	WHEREAS, The first film in which he was the leading actor
20	20	was The Big Trail in 1930; it was then that the studio gave him
21	21	the screen name "John Wayne," which he would use for the
22	22	remainder of his acting career; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Starring in classic Western films such as
24	24	Stagecoach, Red River, The Searchers, and True Grit, Wayne
25	25	personified the archetypal cowboy who is rough-edged and
26	26	plainspoken but also capable of great warmth, kindness, and
27	27	generosity; he won an Oscar in 1970 for Best Actor for his role as
28	28	Rooster Cogburn in True Grit; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Although best known for his Westerns, John Wayne
30	30	had an impressive list of performances in other genres, such as
31	31	the World War II films Flying Tigers and Sands of Iwo Jima; and
32	32	WHEREAS, Wayne was an avid supporter of the United States
33	33	military and toured bases and hospitals in the South Pacific in
34	34	1943 and 1944 with the United Service Organizations; and
35	35	WHEREAS, In The Alamo, his first film as a director, John
36	36	Wayne played the role of Davy Crockett; the film won an Oscar
37	37	nomination in 1961 for Best Picture; Wayne also directed and
38	38	starred in The Green Berets, which was released in 1968 and was
39	39	set in Vietnam; and
40	40	WHEREAS, Over the course of his acting career, John Wayne
41	41	practically invented the Western hero by combining rugged
42	42	masculinity with the courage to stand up to authority when
43	43	necessary, the strength to match any opponent, and the
44	44	determination to prevail against great odds; John Wayne endures
45	45	as a cultural icon, and his films continue to appeal to new
46	46	audiences; now, therefore, be it
47	47	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
48	48	Legislature, hereby recognize May 26, 2015 as John Wayne Day;
49	49	and, be it further
50	50	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
51	51	honor of this special occasion and as a tribute to the life of
52	52	John Wayne.
