11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 997
22 WHEREAS, John Wayne is the prototypical American hero,
33 symbolizing such traits as self-reliance, grace under pressure,
44 resolve, and patriotism; and
55 WHEREAS, Born Marion Robert Morrison on May 26, 1907, in
66 Winterset, Iowa, he moved with his parents as a young boy to
77 California; in 1916, while the family was living in Glendale, he
88 began going by "Duke," a nickname that followed him throughout
99 his life; and
1010 WHEREAS, In 1925, he began attending the University of
1111 Southern California on a football scholarship, playing offensive
1212 lineman; after breaking his collarbone in a surfing accident
1313 before his junior year, he withdrew from the university and began
1414 working at Fox Film Corporation as a laborer moving set props and
1515 as an occasional extra in movies; and
1616 WHEREAS, While working at the studio, he met Wyatt Earp, who
1717 was a consultant to Western film director John Ford, and he would
1818 adopt some of Earp's mannerisms for his roles as a cowboy; and
1919 WHEREAS, The first film in which he was the leading actor
2020 was The Big Trail in 1930; it was then that the studio gave him
2121 the screen name "John Wayne," which he would use for the
2222 remainder of his acting career; and
2323 WHEREAS, Starring in classic Western films such as
2424 Stagecoach, Red River, The Searchers, and True Grit, Wayne
2525 personified the archetypal cowboy who is rough-edged and
2626 plainspoken but also capable of great warmth, kindness, and
2727 generosity; he won an Oscar in 1970 for Best Actor for his role as
2828 Rooster Cogburn in True Grit; and
2929 WHEREAS, Although best known for his Westerns, John Wayne
3030 had an impressive list of performances in other genres, such as
3131 the World War II films Flying Tigers and Sands of Iwo Jima; and
3232 WHEREAS, Wayne was an avid supporter of the United States
3333 military and toured bases and hospitals in the South Pacific in
3434 1943 and 1944 with the United Service Organizations; and
3535 WHEREAS, In The Alamo, his first film as a director, John
3636 Wayne played the role of Davy Crockett; the film won an Oscar
3737 nomination in 1961 for Best Picture; Wayne also directed and
3838 starred in The Green Berets, which was released in 1968 and was
3939 set in Vietnam; and
4040 WHEREAS, Over the course of his acting career, John Wayne
4141 practically invented the Western hero by combining rugged
4242 masculinity with the courage to stand up to authority when
4343 necessary, the strength to match any opponent, and the
4444 determination to prevail against great odds; John Wayne endures
4545 as a cultural icon, and his films continue to appeal to new
4646 audiences; now, therefore, be it
4747 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4848 Legislature, hereby recognize May 26, 2015 as John Wayne Day;
4949 and, be it further
5050 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
5151 honor of this special occasion and as a tribute to the life of
5252 John Wayne.
