55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the authorized uses of county law library funds.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Section 323.023(b), Local Government Code, is
1010 amended to read as follows:
1111 (b) The clerks of the respective courts shall collect the
1212 costs and pay them to the county treasurer, or to any other official
1313 who discharges the duties commonly delegated to the county
1414 treasurer, for deposit in a fund to be known as the county law
1515 library fund. The fund may be used only for:
1616 (1) establishing the law library after the entry of
1717 the order creating it;
1818 (2) purchasing or leasing library materials,
1919 maintaining the library, or acquiring furniture, shelving, or
2020 equipment for the library; [or]
2121 (3) purchasing or leasing library materials or
2222 acquiring library equipment, including computers, software, and
2323 subscriptions to obtain access to electronic research networks for
2424 use by judges in the county; or
2525 (4) establishing and maintaining a legal self-help
2626 center and other legal assistance programs to provide onsite and
2727 online legal resources to county residents.
2828 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2929 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3030 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3131 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3232 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
