55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the filing of a degree plan by students at public junior
88 colleges.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 51.9685(a)(2), Education Code, is
1111 amended to read as follows:
1212 (2) "Institution of higher education" and "public
1313 junior college" have [has] the meanings [meaning] assigned by
1414 Section 61.003.
1515 SECTION 2. Section 51.9685, Education Code, is amended by
1616 adding Subsection (c-1) to read as follows:
1717 (c-1) Notwithstanding Subsections (b) and (c), a student
1818 enrolled in an associate or bachelor's degree program at a public
1919 junior college shall file a degree plan with the college not later
2020 than:
2121 (1) the end of the second regular semester or term
2222 immediately following the semester or term in which the student
2323 earned a cumulative total of 15 or more semester credit hours of
2424 course credit for courses described by Subsection (b); or
2525 (2) if the student begins the student's first semester
2626 or term at the college with 15 or more semester credit hours of
2727 course credit for courses described by Subsection (b), the end of
2828 the student's second regular semester or term at the college.
2929 SECTION 3. Section 51.9685(c-1), Education Code, as added
3030 by this Act, applies beginning with students who initially enroll
3131 in a public junior college for the 2018 fall semester.
3232 SECTION 4. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3333 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3434 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3535 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3636 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
