| 9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Section 61.022(a), Education Code, is amended to | |
| 11 | 11 | read as follows: | |
| 12 | 12 | (a) The board shall consist of nine members appointed by the | |
| 13 | 13 | governor so as to provide representation from diverse [all] areas | |
| 14 | 14 | of the state with the advice and consent of the senate, and as the | |
| 15 | 15 | constitution provides. Members of the board serve staggered | |
| 16 | 16 | six-year terms. The terms of one-third of the members expire August | |
| 17 | 17 | 31 of each odd-numbered year. | |
| 18 | 18 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | |
| 19 | 19 | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | |
| 20 | 20 | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | |
| 21 | 21 | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | |
| 22 | 22 | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
