| 7 | 7 | | relating to the Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) Grant Program. |

| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Section 134.006(c), Education Code, is amended |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | to read as follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | (c) In awarding a grant under this section, the commission |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | shall primarily consider the potential economic returns to the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | state from the development of the career and technical education |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | course or program. The commission may also consider whether the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | course or program: |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (1) is part of a new, emerging industry or high-demand |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | occupation in the region served by the public junior college, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | public technical institute, or independent school district, as |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | demonstrated by local labor market information; |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (2) offers new or expanded dual credit career and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | technical educational opportunities in public high schools; [or] |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | (3) is provided in cooperation with other public |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | junior colleges or public technical institutes across existing |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | service areas; or |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (4) includes career counseling and advising services |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | for students. |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with grants awarded |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | for the 2018-2019 academic year. |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
