66 AN ACT
77 relating to the Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) Grant Program.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Section 134.006(c), Education Code, is amended
1010 to read as follows:
1111 (c) In awarding a grant under this section, the commission
1212 shall primarily consider the potential economic returns to the
1313 state from the development of the career and technical education
1414 course or program. The commission may also consider whether the
1515 course or program:
1616 (1) is part of a new, emerging industry or high-demand
1717 occupation in the region served by the public junior college,
1818 public technical institute, or independent school district, as
1919 demonstrated by local labor market information;
2020 (2) offers new or expanded dual credit career and
2121 technical educational opportunities in public high schools; [or]
2222 (3) is provided in cooperation with other public
2323 junior colleges or public technical institutes across existing
2424 service areas; or
2525 (4) includes career counseling and advising services
2626 for students.
2727 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with grants awarded
2828 for the 2018-2019 academic year.
2929 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3030 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3131 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3232 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3333 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
