| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 28.025(b-2), Education Code, as amended |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | by Chapter 211 (H.B. 5), Acts of the 83rd Legislature, Regular |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Session, 2013, is amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | (b-2) In adopting rules under Subsection (b-1), the State |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Board of Education shall provide for a student to comply with the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | curriculum requirements for an advanced English course under |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Subsection (b-1)(1) taken after successful completion of English I |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and [,] English II, [and English III,] for an advanced mathematics |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | course under Subsection (b-1)(2) taken after the successful |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | completion of Algebra I and geometry, and for any advanced science |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | course under Subsection (b-1)(3) by successfully completing a |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | course in the appropriate content area that has been approved as an |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | advanced course by board rule or that is offered as an advanced |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | course for credit without board approval as provided by Section |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | 28.002(g-1). |

| 25 | 25 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | school year. |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
