55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the sequencing of required English language arts
88 courses in schools.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 28.025(b-2), Education Code, as amended
1111 by Chapter 211 (H.B. 5), Acts of the 83rd Legislature, Regular
1212 Session, 2013, is amended to read as follows:
1313 (b-2) In adopting rules under Subsection (b-1), the State
1414 Board of Education shall provide for a student to comply with the
1515 curriculum requirements for an advanced English course under
1616 Subsection (b-1)(1) taken after successful completion of English I
1717 and [,] English II, [and English III,] for an advanced mathematics
1818 course under Subsection (b-1)(2) taken after the successful
1919 completion of Algebra I and geometry, and for any advanced science
2020 course under Subsection (b-1)(3) by successfully completing a
2121 course in the appropriate content area that has been approved as an
2222 advanced course by board rule or that is offered as an advanced
2323 course for credit without board approval as provided by Section
2424 28.002(g-1).
2525 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018
2626 school year.
2727 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2828 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2929 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3030 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3131 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
