55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to including student input before the adoption of a major
88 curriculum initiative by a school district.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 28.002(g), Education Code, is amended to
1111 read as follows:
1212 (g) A local instructional plan may draw on state curriculum
1313 frameworks and program standards as appropriate. Each district is
1414 encouraged to exceed minimum requirements of law and State Board of
1515 Education rule. Each district shall ensure that all children in the
1616 district participate actively in a balanced curriculum designed to
1717 meet individual needs. Before the adoption of a major curriculum
1818 initiative, including the use of a curriculum management system, a
1919 district must use a process that:
2020 (1) includes student and teacher input;
2121 (2) provides district employees with the opportunity
2222 to express opinions regarding the initiative; and
2323 (3) includes a meeting of the board of trustees of the
2424 district at which:
2525 (A) information regarding the initiative is
2626 presented, including the cost of the initiative and any
2727 alternatives that were considered; and
2828 (B) members of the public and district employees
2929 are given the opportunity to comment regarding the initiative.
3030 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
