115 relating to requiring certain school districts to allow students
126 who participate in Special Olympics to earn a letter on that basis.
137 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
148 SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 33, Education Code, is
159 amended by adding Section 33.093 to read as follows:
1610 Sec. 33.093. RECOGNITION OF PARTICIPATION IN SPECIAL
1711 OLYMPICS. If a school district allows high school students to earn
1812 a letter for academic, athletic, or extracurricular achievements,
1913 the district must allow high school students in the district to earn
2014 a letter on the basis of a student's participation in a Special
2115 Olympics event.
2216 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018
2317 school year.
2418 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2519 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2620 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2721 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2822 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
