44 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
55 AN ACT
66 relating to curriculum requirements in American history at
77 institutions of higher education.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Section 51.302(b), Education Code, is amended to
1010 read as follows:
1111 (b) Except as provided by Subsection (c), a college or
1212 university receiving state support or state aid from public funds
1313 may not grant a baccalaureate degree or a lesser degree or academic
1414 certificate to any person unless the person has credit for six
1515 semester hours or its equivalent in American history [History]. A
1616 student must [is entitled to] submit [as much as] three semester
1717 hours of credit or its equivalent from a course providing a
1818 comprehensive survey of American history or [in] Texas history
1919 [History] in partial satisfaction of this requirement. The
2020 remaining three semester hours of credit or its equivalent may be
2121 satisfied by credit from any American history or Texas history
2222 course. The college or university may determine that a student has
2323 satisfied this requirement in whole or part on the basis of credit
2424 granted to the student by the college or university for a
2525 substantially equivalent course completed at another accredited
2626 college or university, or on the basis of the student's successful
2727 completion of an advanced standing examination administered on the
2828 conditions and under the circumstances common for the college or
2929 university's advanced standing examinations. The college or
3030 university may grant as much as three semester hours of credit or
3131 its equivalent toward satisfaction of this requirement for
3232 substantially equivalent work completed by a student in the program
3333 of an approved senior R.O.T.C. unit.
3434 SECTION 2. The changes in law made by this Act apply only to
3535 the curriculum requirements established for a degree or certificate
3636 program offered by an institution of higher education beginning
3737 with undergraduate students who initially enroll in the institution
3838 for the 2018 fall semester.
3939 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
