| 8 | 8 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 9 | 9 | SECTION 1. Section 498.003, Government Code, is amended by | |
| 10 | 10 | adding Subsection (f) to read as follows: | |
| 11 | 11 | (f) Notwithstanding any other law, the department may award | |
| 12 | 12 | good conduct time to an inmate if the department finds that the | |
| 13 | 13 | inmate has, while confined, provided substantial assistance to a | |
| 14 | 14 | law enforcement agency in the investigation or prosecution of an | |
| 15 | 15 | alleged criminal offense. | |
| 16 | 16 | SECTION 2. Section 498.003(f), Government Code, as added by | |
| 17 | 17 | this Act, applies to an inmate confined in a facility operated by or | |
| 18 | 18 | under contract with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on or | |
| 19 | 19 | after the effective date of this Act, regardless of whether the | |
| 20 | 20 | offense for which the inmate is serving a sentence was committed | |
| 21 | 21 | before, on, or after the effective date of this Act. | |
| 22 | 22 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
