104 AN ACT
115 relating to requiring public schools to provide information to
126 certain students on the availability of financial assistance for
137 postsecondary education.
148 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
159 SECTION 1. Section 33.007(b), Education Code, is amended to
1610 read as follows:
1711 (b) During the first school year a student is enrolled in a
1812 high school or at the high school level in an open-enrollment
1913 charter school, and again during each year of a student's
2014 enrollment in high school or at the high school level, a school
2115 counselor shall provide information about postsecondary education
2216 to the student and the student's parent or guardian. The
2317 information must include information regarding:
2418 (1) the importance of postsecondary education;
2519 (2) the advantages of earning an endorsement and a
2620 performance acknowledgment and completing the distinguished level
2721 of achievement under the foundation high school program under
2822 Section 28.025;
2923 (3) the disadvantages of taking courses to prepare for
3024 a high school equivalency examination relative to the benefits of
3125 taking courses leading to a high school diploma;
3226 (4) financial aid eligibility;
3327 (5) instruction on how to apply for federal financial
3428 aid;
3529 (6) the center for financial aid information
3630 established under Section 61.0776;
3731 (7) the automatic admission of certain students to
3832 general academic teaching institutions as provided by Section
3933 51.803;
4034 (8) the eligibility and academic performance
4135 requirements for the TEXAS Grant as provided by Subchapter M,
4236 Chapter 56; [and]
4337 (9) the availability of programs in the district under
4438 which a student may earn college credit, including advanced
4539 placement programs, dual credit programs, joint high school and
4640 college credit programs, and international baccalaureate programs;
4741 and
4842 (10) the availability of education and training
4943 vouchers and tuition and fee waivers to attend an institution of
5044 higher education as provided by Section 54.366 for a student who is
5145 or was previously in the conservatorship of the Department of
5246 Family and Protective Services.
5347 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
5448 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
5549 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
5650 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
5751 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
