14 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

15 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Section 33.007(b), Education Code, is amended to |
---|
16 | 10 | | read as follows: |
---|
17 | 11 | | (b) During the first school year a student is enrolled in a |
---|
18 | 12 | | high school or at the high school level in an open-enrollment |
---|
19 | 13 | | charter school, and again during each year of a student's |
---|
20 | 14 | | enrollment in high school or at the high school level, a school |
---|
21 | 15 | | counselor shall provide information about postsecondary education |
---|
22 | 16 | | to the student and the student's parent or guardian. The |
---|
23 | 17 | | information must include information regarding: |
---|
24 | 18 | | (1) the importance of postsecondary education; |
---|
25 | 19 | | (2) the advantages of earning an endorsement and a |
---|
26 | 20 | | performance acknowledgment and completing the distinguished level |
---|
27 | 21 | | of achievement under the foundation high school program under |
---|
28 | 22 | | Section 28.025; |
---|
29 | 23 | | (3) the disadvantages of taking courses to prepare for |
---|
30 | 24 | | a high school equivalency examination relative to the benefits of |
---|
31 | 25 | | taking courses leading to a high school diploma; |
---|
32 | 26 | | (4) financial aid eligibility; |
---|
33 | 27 | | (5) instruction on how to apply for federal financial |
---|
34 | 28 | | aid; |
---|
35 | 29 | | (6) the center for financial aid information |
---|
36 | 30 | | established under Section 61.0776; |
---|
37 | 31 | | (7) the automatic admission of certain students to |
---|
38 | 32 | | general academic teaching institutions as provided by Section |
---|
39 | 33 | | 51.803; |
---|
40 | 34 | | (8) the eligibility and academic performance |
---|
41 | 35 | | requirements for the TEXAS Grant as provided by Subchapter M, |
---|
42 | 36 | | Chapter 56; [and] |
---|
43 | 37 | | (9) the availability of programs in the district under |
---|
44 | 38 | | which a student may earn college credit, including advanced |
---|
45 | 39 | | placement programs, dual credit programs, joint high school and |
---|
46 | 40 | | college credit programs, and international baccalaureate programs; |
---|
47 | 41 | | and |
---|
48 | 42 | | (10) the availability of education and training |
---|
49 | 43 | | vouchers and tuition and fee waivers to attend an institution of |
---|
50 | 44 | | higher education as provided by Section 54.366 for a student who is |
---|
51 | 45 | | or was previously in the conservatorship of the Department of |
---|
52 | 46 | | Family and Protective Services. |
---|
53 | 47 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
---|
54 | 48 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
---|
55 | 49 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
---|
56 | 50 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
---|
57 | 51 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
