66 AN ACT
77 relating to the establishment of a scholarship program to support
88 study abroad by students enrolled at public institutions of higher
99 education.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Chapter 56, Education Code, is amended by adding
1212 Subchapter Z to read as follows:
1313 SUBCHAPTER Z. MISCELLANEOUS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS
1414 Sec. 56.951. STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. (a) In this
1515 section, "coordinating board" means the Texas Higher Education
1616 Coordinating Board.
1717 (b) The coordinating board shall administer a program to
1818 provide scholarships to support study abroad by eligible students
1919 enrolled in a certificate or degree program at an institution of
2020 higher education. The coordinating board shall adopt any rules
2121 necessary to implement the program, including rules regarding
2222 student eligibility for a scholarship under the program.
2323 (c) A student may not receive scholarships under the program
2424 for a period of more than two years or for a total amount greater
2525 than $10,000.
2626 (d) A scholarship may be awarded only to support study
2727 abroad that directly relates to or provides course credit toward
2828 the student's certificate or degree program, as determined by the
2929 coordinating board.
3030 (e) The coordinating board may fund the program from
3131 available appropriations and from gifts, grants, and donations, and
3232 may solicit and accept gifts, grants, and donations for that
3333 purpose.
3434 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3535 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3636 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3737 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3838 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
