55 AN ACT
66 relating to the creation of a grant program to assist law
77 enforcement agencies with the purchase of bulletproof vests.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 772, Government Code, is
1010 amended by adding Section 772.0073 to read as follows:
1111 Sec. 772.0073. BULLETPROOF VEST GRANT PROGRAM. (a)
1212 In this
1313 section, "criminal justice division" means the criminal justice
1414 division established under Section 772.006.
1515 (b) The criminal justice division shall establish and
1616 administer a grant program to provide financial assistance to a law
1717 enforcement agency seeking to equip its peace officers with
1818 bulletproof vests. Any law enforcement agency in this state may
1919 apply for a grant under this section.
2020 (c) An agency receiving a grant under this section must, as
2121 soon as practicable after receiving the grant, provide to the
2222 criminal justice division proof of purchase of bulletproof vests,
2323 including the price of each vest and the number of vests purchased.
2424 (d) Not later than December 1 of each year, the criminal
2525 justice division shall submit a report to the Legislative Budget
2626 Board reporting the following information for the preceding state
2727 fiscal year:
2828 (1) the name of each agency that applied for a grant
2929 under this section;
3030 (2) the amount of money distributed to each agency
3131 that received a grant under this section; and
3232 (3) the number of vests purchased by each agency
3333 described by Subdivision (2).
3434 (e) The criminal justice division may use any revenue
3535 available for purposes of this section.
3636 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3737 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3838 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3939 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4040 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
