| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 772, Government Code, is |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | amended by adding Section 772.0073 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Sec. 772.0073. BULLETPROOF VEST GRANT PROGRAM. (a) |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | In this |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | section, "criminal justice division" means the criminal justice |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | division established under Section 772.006. |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | (b) The criminal justice division shall establish and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | administer a grant program to provide financial assistance to a law |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | enforcement agency seeking to equip its peace officers with |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | bulletproof vests. Any law enforcement agency in this state may |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | apply for a grant under this section. |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (c) An agency receiving a grant under this section must, as |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | soon as practicable after receiving the grant, provide to the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | criminal justice division proof of purchase of bulletproof vests, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | including the price of each vest and the number of vests purchased. |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (d) Not later than December 1 of each year, the criminal |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | justice division shall submit a report to the Legislative Budget |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Board reporting the following information for the preceding state |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | fiscal year: |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | (1) the name of each agency that applied for a grant |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | under this section; |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | (2) the amount of money distributed to each agency |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | that received a grant under this section; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | (3) the number of vests purchased by each agency |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | described by Subdivision (2). |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | (e) The criminal justice division may use any revenue |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | available for purposes of this section. |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
|---|
