66 AN ACT
77 relating to Texas Military Heroes Day in public schools.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is
1010 amended by adding Section 29.9071 to read as follows:
1111 Sec. 29.9071. TEXAS MILITARY HEROES DAY. (a) To educate
1212 students about the sacrifices made by brave Texans who have served
1313 in the armed forces of the United States, the governor shall
1414 designate a day to be known as Texas Military Heroes Day in public
1515 schools.
1616 (b) Texas Military Heroes Day shall include appropriate
1717 instruction, as determined by each school district. Instruction
1818 may include:
1919 (1) information about persons who have served in the
2020 armed forces of the United States and are from the community or the
2121 geographic area in which the district is located; and
2222 (2) participation, in-person or using technology, in
2323 age-appropriate learning projects at battlefields and gravesites
2424 associated with a person who has served in the armed forces.
2525 (c) The agency may collaborate with other state agencies to
2626 promote Texas Military Heroes Day.
2727 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018
2828 school year.
2929 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3030 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3131 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3232 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3333 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
