| 7 | 7 | | relating to Texas Military Heroes Day in public schools. |

| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | amended by adding Section 29.9071 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Sec. 29.9071. TEXAS MILITARY HEROES DAY. (a) To educate |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | students about the sacrifices made by brave Texans who have served |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | in the armed forces of the United States, the governor shall |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | designate a day to be known as Texas Military Heroes Day in public |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | schools. |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (b) Texas Military Heroes Day shall include appropriate |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | instruction, as determined by each school district. Instruction |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | may include: |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | (1) information about persons who have served in the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | armed forces of the United States and are from the community or the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | geographic area in which the district is located; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | (2) participation, in-person or using technology, in |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | age-appropriate learning projects at battlefields and gravesites |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | associated with a person who has served in the armed forces. |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (c) The agency may collaborate with other state agencies to |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | promote Texas Military Heroes Day. |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | school year. |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
