| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. The heading to Section 372.053, Transportation |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Code, is amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Sec. 372.053. [VETERAN] DISCOUNT PROGRAM FOR CERTAIN |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | VETERANS AND PURPLE HEART RECIPIENTS. |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | SECTION 2. Section 372.053(a), Transportation Code, is |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (a) A toll project entity may establish a discount program |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | for electronic toll collection customers. The program must |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | include free or discounted use of the entity's toll project by an |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | electronic toll collection customer whose account relates to a |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | vehicle registered under Section 504.202, [or] 504.315(f) or (g), |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | or 504.5115. |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | SECTION 3. Subchapter F, Chapter 504, Transportation Code, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | is amended by adding Section 504.5115 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Sec. 504.5115. CERTAIN PURPLE HEART RECIPIENTS. (a) The |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | department shall issue specialty license plates for recipients of a |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Purple Heart awarded by the Department of Public Safety or another |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | law enforcement agency in this state. |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | (b) The fee for issuance of one set of the license plates is |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | $3. |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | (c) A person issued specialty license plates under this |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | section shall be issued one set of the license plates without |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | payment of the registration fee required under Chapter 502. |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | SECTION 4. The heading to Section 681.008, Transportation |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Code, is amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Sec. 681.008. PARKING PRIVILEGES: CERTAIN VETERANS AND |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | [MILITARY] AWARD RECIPIENTS. |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | SECTION 5. Section 681.008(b), Transportation Code, is |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | (b) A vehicle on which license plates described by |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Subsection (a)(2) or issued under Section 504.202, 504.308, |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | 504.310, 504.315, 504.316, [or] 504.319, or 504.5115 are displayed |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | is exempt from the payment of a parking fee collected through a |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | parking meter charged by a governmental authority other than a |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | branch of the federal government, when being operated by or for the |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | transportation of: |
|---|
| 46 | 46 | | (1) the person who registered the vehicle under |
|---|
| 47 | 47 | | Section 504.202(a), 504.308, 504.310, 504.315, 504.316, [or] |
|---|
| 48 | 48 | | 504.319, or 504.5115; |
|---|
| 49 | 49 | | (2) a person described in Section 504.202(b) if the |
|---|
| 50 | 50 | | vehicle is registered under that subsection; or |
|---|
| 51 | 51 | | (3) the owner or operator of a vehicle displaying |
|---|
| 52 | 52 | | license plates described by Subsection (a)(2). |
|---|
| 53 | 53 | | SECTION 6. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
