55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to the option of providing an e-mail address on a voter
88 registration application and certificate.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 13.122(a), Election Code, is amended to
1111 read as follows:
1212 (a) In addition to the other statements and spaces for
1313 entering information that appear on an officially prescribed
1414 registration application form, each official form must include:
1515 (1) the statement: "I understand that giving false
1616 information to procure a voter registration is perjury and a crime
1717 under state and federal law.";
1818 (2) a space for the applicant's registration number;
1919 (3) a space for the applicant's Texas driver's license
2020 number or number of a personal identification card issued by the
2121 Department of Public Safety;
2222 (4) a space for the applicant's e-mail address and
2323 telephone number;
2424 (5) a space for the applicant's social security
2525 number;
2626 (6) a space for the applicant's sex;
2727 (7) a statement indicating that the furnishing of the
2828 applicant's telephone number, e-mail address, and sex is optional;
2929 (8) a space or box for indicating whether the
3030 applicant or voter is submitting new registration information or a
3131 change in current registration information;
3232 (9) a statement instructing a voter who is using the
3333 form to make a change in current registration information to enter
3434 the voter's name and the changed information in the appropriate
3535 spaces on the form;
3636 (10) a statement that if the applicant declines to
3737 register to vote, that fact will remain confidential and will be
3838 used only for voter registration purposes;
3939 (11) a statement that if the applicant does register
4040 to vote, information regarding the agency or office to which the
4141 application is submitted will remain confidential and will be used
4242 only for voter registration purposes;
4343 (12) a space or box for indicating whether the
4444 applicant is interested in working as an election judge;
4545 (13) a statement warning that a conviction for making
4646 a false statement may result in imprisonment for up to the maximum
4747 amount of time provided by law, a fine of up to the maximum amount
4848 provided by law, or both the imprisonment and the fine; and
4949 (14) any other voter registration information
5050 required by federal law or considered appropriate and required by
5151 the secretary of state.
5252 SECTION 2. Section 15.002(d), Election Code, is amended to
5353 read as follows:
5454 (d) A voter registration certificate may contain the
5555 voter's:
5656 (1) sex; and
5757 (2) e-mail address.
5858 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
