55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to a requirement that each state university provide to a
88 student certain employment data relating to the student's major
99 field of study.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
1212 amended by adding Section 51.9196 to read as follows:
1313 Sec. 51.9196. REQUIRED EMPLOYMENT DATA FOR NEW STUDENTS
1414 REGARDING MAJOR FIELD OF STUDY. (a) In this section, "general
1515 academic teaching institution" and "public state college" have the
1616 meanings assigned by Section 61.003.
1717 (b) As soon as practicable following the student's
1818 enrollment, each general academic teaching institution other than a
1919 public state college shall provide to each first-time entering
2020 undergraduate student, including each undergraduate student who
2121 transfers to the institution, information, in electronic or paper
2222 format, relating to the student's major field of study from the
2323 Texas Consumer Resource for Education and Workforce Statistics
2424 ("Texas CREWS") report on gainful employment applicable to the
2525 institution for the most recent year for which that information is
2626 available.
2727 (c) If a student to whom an institution is required to
2828 provide information under this section has not chosen a major field
2929 of study, the institution shall provide to the student an Internet
3030 website link to the Texas CREWS report on gainful employment
3131 applicable to the institution for the most recent year for which
3232 that information is available.
3333 SECTION 2. Section 51.9196, Education Code, as added by
3434 this Act, applies beginning with the 2017 fall semester.
3535 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3636 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3737 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3838 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3939 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
