| 6 | 6 | | relating to the duties and continuation of the Maternal Mortality |

| 7 | 7 | | and Morbidity Task Force. |

| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Section 34.005, Health and Safety Code, is |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Sec. 34.005. DUTIES OF TASK FORCE. The task force shall: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | (1) study and review: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | (A) cases of pregnancy-related deaths; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | (B) trends, rates, or disparities in maternal |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | mortality and in severe maternal morbidity; |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (2) determine the feasibility of the task force |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | studying cases of severe maternal morbidity; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (3) make recommendations to help reduce the incidence |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | of pregnancy-related deaths and severe maternal morbidity in this |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | state. |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | SECTION 2. Section 34.007, Health and Safety Code, is |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Sec. 34.007. SELECTION AND REVIEW OF CASES. (a) The |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | department shall determine a statistically significant number of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | cases of pregnancy-related deaths for review. The department shall |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | [randomly] select either some or all cases for the task force to |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | review under this subsection to reflect a cross-section of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | pregnancy-related deaths in this state. |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | (b) The department shall statistically analyze aggregate |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | data of maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity in this |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | state to identify any trends, rates, or disparities. |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | (c) If feasible, the department may select cases of severe |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | maternal morbidity for review. In selecting cases under this |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | subsection, the department shall randomly select cases for the task |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | force to review to reflect trends identified under Subsection (b). |

| 36 | 36 | | SECTION 3. Section 34.018, Health and Safety Code, is |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Sec. 34.018. SUNSET PROVISION. The task force is subject to |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Chapter 325, Government Code (Texas Sunset Act). Unless continued |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | in existence as provided by that chapter, the task force is |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | abolished and this chapter expires September 1, 2023 [2019]. |

| 42 | 42 | | SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
