| 6 | 6 | | relating to enrollment of a student in a prekindergarten program |

| 7 | 7 | | offered by a public school district. |

| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Section 29.153, Education Code, is amended by |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | adding Subsections (g) and (h) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | (g) The commissioner shall adopt a uniform schedule that |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | provides the period during which school districts may enroll |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | students in a prekindergarten program for the following school |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | year. The period for enrollment under the uniform schedule adopted |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | by the commissioner must be at least 10 school days. Except as |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | provided by Subsection (h), a school district may not enroll a |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | student in a prekindergarten program during any other period. |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (h) A school district may adopt a policy that allows a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | student to enroll after the enrollment period if the student: |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (1) becomes a resident of the district after the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | enrollment period; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | (2) enrolls in the district on or before the 10th day |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | after the date the student becomes a resident of the district. |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | school year. |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
