| 6 | 6 | | relating to certain courses or activities approved by the board of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | trustees of a school district for course credit. |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Sections 28.002(g-1) and (g-2), Education Code, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | are amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | (g-1) A district may also offer a course or other activity, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | including an apprenticeship or training hours needed to obtain an |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | industry-recognized credential or certificate, that is approved by |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the board of trustees for credit without obtaining State Board of |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Education approval if: |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | (1) the district: |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | (A) develops a program under which the district |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | partners with a public or private institution of higher education |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and local business, labor, and community leaders to develop and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | provide the courses; or |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | (B) adopts a program under which the district |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | partners with a local economic development corporation and local |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | businesses to develop and provide the courses; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (2) the course or other activity allows students to |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | enter: |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | (A) a career or technology training program in |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | the district's region of the state; |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | (B) an institution of higher education without |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | remediation; |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | (C) an apprenticeship training program; or |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | (D) an internship required as part of |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | accreditation toward an industry-recognized credential or |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | certificate for course credit. |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | (g-2) Each school district shall annually report to the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | agency the names of any [the] courses, programs, institutions of |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | higher education, or |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | [and] internships in which the district's |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | students have enrolled under Subsection (g-1). The agency shall |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | make available information provided under this subsection to other |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | districts. |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
