44 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
55 AN ACT
66 relating to certain courses or activities approved by the board of
77 trustees of a school district for course credit.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Sections 28.002(g-1) and (g-2), Education Code,
1010 are amended to read as follows:
1111 (g-1) A district may also offer a course or other activity,
1212 including an apprenticeship or training hours needed to obtain an
1313 industry-recognized credential or certificate, that is approved by
1414 the board of trustees for credit without obtaining State Board of
1515 Education approval if:
1616 (1) the district:
1717 (A) develops a program under which the district
1818 partners with a public or private institution of higher education
1919 and local business, labor, and community leaders to develop and
2020 provide the courses; or
2121 (B) adopts a program under which the district
2222 partners with a local economic development corporation and local
2323 businesses to develop and provide the courses; and
2424 (2) the course or other activity allows students to
2525 enter:
2626 (A) a career or technology training program in
2727 the district's region of the state;
2828 (B) an institution of higher education without
2929 remediation;
3030 (C) an apprenticeship training program; or
3131 (D) an internship required as part of
3232 accreditation toward an industry-recognized credential or
3333 certificate for course credit.
3434 (g-2) Each school district shall annually report to the
3535 agency the names of any [the] courses, programs, institutions of
3636 higher education, or
3737 [and] internships in which the district's
3838 students have enrolled under Subsection (g-1). The agency shall
3939 make available information provided under this subsection to other
4040 districts.
4141 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
4242 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
4343 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
4444 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4545 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
