| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 504.511, Transportation Code, is |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | transferred to Subchapter E, Chapter 504, Transportation Code, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | redesignated as Section 504.416, Transportation Code, and amended |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | to read as follows: |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Sec. 504.416 [504.511]. PEACE OFFICERS [WOUNDED OR KILLED |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | IN LINE OF DUTY]. (a) The department shall issue specialty license |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | plates for peace officers [: |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | [(1) a person wounded in the line of duty as a peace |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | officer; or |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | [(2) a surviving spouse, parent, brother, sister, or |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | adult child, including an adopted child or stepchild, of a person |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | killed in the line of duty as a peace officer]. |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | (b) License plates issued under this section must include |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | the words "To Protect and Serve" above an insignia depicting a |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | yellow rose superimposed over the outline of a badge. |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (c) [The fee for issuance of the license plates is $20. |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | [(d)] In this section, "peace officer" has the meaning |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | assigned by Section 1.07, Penal Code. |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act regarding the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | issuance of license plates by the Texas Department of Motor |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Vehicles applies only to the issuance of license plates by the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | department for a registration period beginning on or after the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | effective date of this Act. For a registration period that begins |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | before the effective date of this Act, the department shall issue |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | license plates as required by the law in effect immediately before |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | the effective date of this Act, and the former law is continued in |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | effect for that purpose. |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
