66 AN ACT
77 relating to the issuance of peace officer specialty license plates;
88 eliminating a fee.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 504.511, Transportation Code, is
1111 transferred to Subchapter E, Chapter 504, Transportation Code,
1212 redesignated as Section 504.416, Transportation Code, and amended
1313 to read as follows:
1414 Sec. 504.416 [504.511]. PEACE OFFICERS [WOUNDED OR KILLED
1515 IN LINE OF DUTY]. (a) The department shall issue specialty license
1616 plates for peace officers [:
1717 [(1) a person wounded in the line of duty as a peace
1818 officer; or
1919 [(2) a surviving spouse, parent, brother, sister, or
2020 adult child, including an adopted child or stepchild, of a person
2121 killed in the line of duty as a peace officer].
2222 (b) License plates issued under this section must include
2323 the words "To Protect and Serve" above an insignia depicting a
2424 yellow rose superimposed over the outline of a badge.
2525 (c) [The fee for issuance of the license plates is $20.
2626 [(d)] In this section, "peace officer" has the meaning
2727 assigned by Section 1.07, Penal Code.
2828 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act regarding the
2929 issuance of license plates by the Texas Department of Motor
3030 Vehicles applies only to the issuance of license plates by the
3131 department for a registration period beginning on or after the
3232 effective date of this Act. For a registration period that begins
3333 before the effective date of this Act, the department shall issue
3434 license plates as required by the law in effect immediately before
3535 the effective date of this Act, and the former law is continued in
3636 effect for that purpose.
3737 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
