99 AN ACT
1010 relating to the ability of certain dependents of members of the
1111 United States military to enroll full-time in courses provided
1212 through the state virtual school network.
1313 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1414 SECTION 1. Section 30A.002(b), Education Code, is amended
1515 to read as follows:
1616 (b) A student is eligible to enroll full-time in courses
1717 provided through the state virtual school network only if the
1818 student:
1919 (1) was enrolled in a public school in this state in
2020 the preceding school year; [or]
2121 (2) is a dependent of a member of the United States
2222 military who has been deployed or transferred to this state and was
2323 enrolled in a publicly funded school outside of this state in the
2424 preceding school year; or
2525 (3) has been placed in substitute care in this state,
2626 regardless of whether the student was enrolled in a public school in
2727 this state in the preceding school year.
2828 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018
2929 school year.
3030 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3131 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3232 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3333 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3434 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
