9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, is | |
11 | 11 | amended by adding Section 411.210 to read as follows: | |
12 | 12 | Sec. 411.210. FIREARM SAFETY AND SUICIDE PREVENTION PUBLIC | |
13 | 13 | AWARENESS CAMPAIGN. (a) The department shall develop and | |
14 | 14 | implement a public awareness campaign designed to encourage firearm | |
15 | 15 | safety and to improve public awareness on the topics of: | |
16 | 16 | (1) prevention of firearm accidents involving | |
17 | 17 | children; | |
18 | 18 | (2) suicide prevention; and | |
19 | 19 | (3) the safe handling and storage of firearms. | |
20 | 20 | (b) In implementing the campaign, the department may | |
21 | 21 | distribute materials that cover the topics described by Subsection | |
22 | 22 | (a). The department may publish materials for the purpose or may | |
23 | 23 | distribute materials published by firearm safety advocacy | |
24 | 24 | organizations. | |
25 | 25 | (c) The department may pay the costs of the campaign and its | |
26 | 26 | administration only from: | |
27 | 27 | (1) the proceeds of fees collected under this | |
28 | 28 | subchapter; | |
29 | 29 | (2) gifts, grants, or donations; | |
30 | 30 | (3) matching funds; and | |
31 | 31 | (4) funds received from the federal government. | |
32 | 32 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
