66 AN ACT
77 relating to providing free full-day prekindergarten for certain
88 children.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 29.153(c), Education Code, is amended to
1111 read as follows:
1212 (c) A prekindergarten class under this section shall be
1313 operated on a full-day [half-day] basis. A district is not required
1414 to provide transportation for a prekindergarten class, but
1515 transportation, if provided, is included for funding purposes as
1616 part of the regular transportation system.
1717 SECTION 2. Section 29.1531(a), Education Code, is amended
1818 to read as follows:
1919 (a) A school district may offer on a tuition basis or use
2020 district funds to provide[:
2121 [(1) an additional half-day of prekindergarten
2222 classes to children eligible for classes under Section 29.153; and
2323 [(2)] half-day and full-day prekindergarten classes
2424 to children not eligible for classes under Section 29.153.
2525 SECTION 3. Section 29.166(a), Education Code, is amended to
2626 read as follows:
2727 (a) A school district is eligible for full-day [half-day]
2828 funding under the Foundation School Program for each student who
2929 satisfies eligibility requirements under Section 29.153(b) and who
3030 is enrolled in a program class.
3131 SECTION 4. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018
3232 school year.
3333 SECTION 5. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3434 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3535 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3636 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3737 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
