66 AN ACT
77 relating to the establishment of a tuition and fee payment program
88 for certain adopted children enrolled in career schools or
99 colleges.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 132, Education Code, is
1212 amended by adding Section 132.026 to read as follows:
1313 Sec. 132.026. TUITION AND FEE REIMBURSEMENT FOR CERTAIN
1414 ADOPTED STUDENTS FORMERLY IN FOSTER OR OTHER RESIDENTIAL CARE. (a)
1515 In this section, "institution of higher education" has the meaning
1616 assigned by Section 61.003.
1717 (b) Using funds appropriated for that purpose, the
1818 commission, in coordination with the Texas Higher Education
1919 Coordinating Board, by rule shall establish a program under which
2020 the commission may reimburse a student in accordance with
2121 Subsection (c) for the payment of tuition and fees to a career
2222 school or college if the student would be eligible for an exemption
2323 from the payment of tuition and fees to an institution of higher
2424 education under Section 54.367.
2525 (c) The reimbursement paid to a student under this section
2626 must be paid not later than the seventh day after the date the
2727 commission receives notification and verification of a tuition and
2828 fee payment made by or on behalf of the student. The rules adopted
2929 under this section must prescribe the form and manner of that
3030 notification and verification.
3131 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with tuition and fees
3232 charged by a career school or college for the 2017-2018 academic
3333 year.
3434 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3535 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3636 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3737 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3838 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
