66 AN ACT
77 relating to restricting the sale of state-owned longhorn cattle in
88 Big Bend Ranch State Park.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Chapter 22, Parks and Wildlife Code, is amended
1111 by adding Subchapter U to read as follows:
1212 SUBCHAPTER U. BIG BEND RANCH STATE PARK
1313 Sec. 22.271. RESTRICTION ON SELLING LONGHORN CATTLE IN BIG
1414 BEND RANCH STATE PARK. (a) The department may not reduce the size
1515 of a herd of longhorn cattle by selling longhorn cattle owned by the
1616 state and located in Big Bend Ranch State Park unless the cattle
1717 remain in the park after the sale.
1818 (b) This section does not prohibit:
1919 (1) the sale of longhorn calves and heifers if the
2020 number of breeding stock is not reduced; or
2121 (2) the sale of cattle to replace breeding stock as
2222 necessary to maintain the size of the herd or to prevent inbreeding.
2323 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2424 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2525 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2626 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2727 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
