55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Tow trucks and their drivers have become an
77 indispensable part of our automotive culture, providing welcome
88 assistance to stranded motorists and helping to clear traffic
99 crashes throughout the nation; and
1010 WHEREAS, More than 35,000 towing companies operate in the
1111 United States, and these businesses employ hundreds of thousands of
1212 people, including dispatchers and safety advisors in addition to
1313 tow truck operators; these dedicated individuals respond to nearly
1414 15 million traffic accidents each year, coming to the aid of
1515 motorists and first responders in all types of weather, at all hours
1616 of the day and night; and
1717 WHEREAS, Part of our nation's transportation system for the
1818 past century, the towing industry traces its roots to 1916, when
1919 Ernest Holmes of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was inspired to design the
2020 first tow vehicle after assisting in the recovery of a crashed Model
2121 T; Mr. Holmes and the company he founded went on to pioneer numerous
2222 innovations in towing and produced such classic wreckers as the
2323 W-45 model used by the U.S. military in World War II; and
2424 WHEREAS, Since the earliest days of the industry, tow truck
2525 drivers have faced considerable dangers while performing their
2626 jobs; working in the midst of busy traffic and often in poor weather
2727 conditions, operators regularly put their lives on the line, and an
2828 average of one tow truck worker is killed every six days in the
2929 United States; and
3030 WHEREAS, To lessen the hazards faced by these skilled
3131 professionals, it is important for motorists to observe proper
3232 safety precautions when they encounter tow trucks on the roadways,
3333 including reducing their speed and moving over to provide
3434 additional clearance between the line of traffic and the tow truck
3535 and stranded vehicle; and
3636 WHEREAS, The towing industry provides essential services to
3737 the public, keeping our roadways clear and open for travel, and its
3838 workers are truly deserving of special recognition; now, therefore,
3939 be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
4141 hereby designate the third week of September as Towing Industry
4242 Awareness Week; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
4444 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
4545 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
4646 passed by the legislature.
