55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, The Texas Hill Country is home to more than 45
77 wineries and vineyards, and Fredericksburg is the epicenter of this
88 popular region; and
99 WHEREAS, Early in the history of Fredericksburg, settlers
1010 used the native mustang grape to make wine; subsequent generations
1111 refined the cultivation of grapes and production of wine, and in
1212 recent years, several wines produced by Fredericksburg-area
1313 vineyards and wineries have won state and national awards,
1414 attesting to the high quality of local viticulture; and
1515 WHEREAS, More than 600 acres of grapes sprawl north and west
1616 of Fredericksburg, and the concentration of vineyards and wineries
1717 along U.S. Highway 290 draws a host of tourists; visitors enjoy
1818 patronizing tasting rooms, wine cellars, festivals, and a variety
1919 of other events, and several guided tours have been established for
2020 the convenience of customers; and
2121 WHEREAS, Fredericksburg has been designated as an American
2222 Viticultural Area by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau;
2323 this appellation officially recognizes a "delimited grape growing
2424 region distinguishable by geographical features, the boundaries of
2525 which have been recognized and defined"; and
2626 WHEREAS, Hill Country wineries and vineyards contribute
2727 significantly to the prosperity of Fredericksburg, and they have
2828 brought the city international recognition that is a source of
2929 pride to area citizens; now, therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
3131 hereby designate Fredericksburg as the official Wine Capital of
3232 Texas.
