9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Gerald Harvey Jones was born in San Antonio in 1933 |

10 | 11 | | and grew up in the Texas Hill Country; as the grandson of a former |
---|
11 | 12 | | trail boss, he often heard fascinating stories about the cowboy |
---|
12 | 13 | | life; he enjoyed sketching and learned to paint with oils, and after |
---|
13 | 14 | | graduating cum laude from North Texas State University, he honed |
---|
14 | 15 | | his talent while teaching at The University of Texas at Austin; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1963, Mr. Harvey was able to quit his job and |
---|
16 | 17 | | devote himself fully to his painting; he received his first major |
---|
17 | 18 | | exhibition just two years later and won the prestigious New |
---|
18 | 19 | | Master's Award from the American Artists Professional League; many |
---|
19 | 20 | | of his works feature iconic Western scenes, and they were collected |

20 | 21 | | by such prominent Texans as President Lyndon Johnson and Governor |
---|
21 | 22 | | John Connally; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, A number of Mr. Harvey's impressionistic paintings, |

23 | 24 | | rich in period detail, portray American and European cities of a |
---|
24 | 25 | | bygone age; over the years, his works have been acquired for |

25 | 26 | | important private, corporate, government, and museum collections, |
---|
26 | 27 | | and they have been shown in a host of exhibitions, including several |

27 | 28 | | at the Gilcrease Museum; in 1991 alone, his art was featured in |
---|
28 | 29 | | three prominent Washington, D.C., exhibitions, at the National |
---|
29 | 30 | | Archives, the Treasury Department, and the Smithsonian |

30 | 31 | | Institution, which hosted "The All-American Horse: Paintings of G. |

31 | 32 | | Harvey" for 10 months; the Smithsonian also commissioned his work |

32 | 33 | | for the cover of its 150th anniversary commemorative book; and |

33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Among myriad accolades, Mr. Harvey has received a |

34 | 35 | | lifetime achievement award from the Briscoe Western Art Museum in |

35 | 36 | | San Antonio, the Legacy Award from the Booth Western Art Museum in |

36 | 37 | | Cartersville, Georgia, and a Distinguished Alumni Award from North |

38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, G. Harvey has earned wide acclaim for his artistry, |

39 | 40 | | and his evocative representations of the Old West have helped |

40 | 41 | | innumerable Texans feel a closer connection to the history of the |

41 | 42 | | Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas |

43 | 44 | | hereby honor G. Harvey for his outstanding accomplishments as an |

44 | 45 | | artist; and, be it further |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

46 | 47 | | prepared for Mr. Harvey as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
