7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Nelson began her exemplary career in municipal |

8 | 9 | | government in 2004, when she was first elected to a seat on the |

9 | 10 | | Marlin City Council; she held that position for the next seven |
---|
10 | 11 | | years, and during that time she served on three occasions as mayor |
---|
11 | 12 | | pro tem; in 2011 she won the first of three consecutive terms as |
---|
12 | 13 | | mayor, becoming the second woman to hold that office in the city's |
---|
13 | 14 | | 145-year history; and |

14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan earned a bachelor's degree in |
---|
15 | 16 | | biology and earth science from Texas Tech University and a master's |
---|
16 | 17 | | degree in secondary education from The University of Texas of the |
---|
17 | 18 | | Permian Basin; she spent a number of years in the public schools and |
---|
18 | 19 | | then went to work for the Texas Youth Commission, where she served |
---|
19 | 20 | | as an assistant principal and as coordinator of the Educational |
---|
20 | 21 | | Assessment Unit; after joining the staff of Texas A&M University in |
---|
21 | 22 | | 2001, she coordinated a special project for the Jeffersonian |
---|
22 | 23 | | Institute; and |

23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, A founding member of the Falls County Boys and Girls |
---|
24 | 25 | | Club, Mayor Nelson played an instrumental role in securing a $1.8 |

25 | 26 | | million grant to fund an after-school program for young people in |

26 | 27 | | Marlin; she is also a member of the Falls County Historical |
---|
27 | 28 | | Commission, the Marlin Rotary Club, the executive committee of the |
---|
28 | 29 | | Heart of Texas Council of Governments, and the board of directors of |

29 | 30 | | the Economic Opportunities Advancement Corporation; her impressive |
---|
30 | 31 | | record of community service includes past membership on the boards |
---|
31 | 32 | | of the Marlin Library, the Palace Theatre, and the American Heart |

32 | 33 | | Association; in recognition of her extensive contributions in the |

33 | 34 | | civic realm, Leadership Texas selected her in 2000 as one of 90 |

34 | 35 | | Texas women to be honored for their lifetime achievements; and |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, During Elizabeth Nelson's six years at the helm of |

36 | 37 | | Marlin's city government, she has demonstrated both able leadership |

37 | 38 | | and a deep concern for the public interest, and she may indeed |

38 | 39 | | reflect with pride on all she has accomplished in behalf of her |

40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas |

41 | 42 | | hereby commend Elizabeth J. Nelson on her service as mayor of Marlin |
