56 WHEREAS, The Honorable Elizabeth J. Nelson is concluding her
67 notable six-year tenure as mayor of Marlin in June 2017; and
78 WHEREAS, Ms. Nelson began her exemplary career in municipal
89 government in 2004, when she was first elected to a seat on the
910 Marlin City Council; she held that position for the next seven
1011 years, and during that time she served on three occasions as mayor
1112 pro tem; in 2011 she won the first of three consecutive terms as
1213 mayor, becoming the second woman to hold that office in the city's
1314 145-year history; and
1415 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan earned a bachelor's degree in
1516 biology and earth science from Texas Tech University and a master's
1617 degree in secondary education from The University of Texas of the
1718 Permian Basin; she spent a number of years in the public schools and
1819 then went to work for the Texas Youth Commission, where she served
1920 as an assistant principal and as coordinator of the Educational
2021 Assessment Unit; after joining the staff of Texas A&M University in
2122 2001, she coordinated a special project for the Jeffersonian
2223 Institute; and
2324 WHEREAS, A founding member of the Falls County Boys and Girls
2425 Club, Mayor Nelson played an instrumental role in securing a $1.8
2526 million grant to fund an after-school program for young people in
2627 Marlin; she is also a member of the Falls County Historical
2728 Commission, the Marlin Rotary Club, the executive committee of the
2829 Heart of Texas Council of Governments, and the board of directors of
2930 the Economic Opportunities Advancement Corporation; her impressive
3031 record of community service includes past membership on the boards
3132 of the Marlin Library, the Palace Theatre, and the American Heart
3233 Association; in recognition of her extensive contributions in the
3334 civic realm, Leadership Texas selected her in 2000 as one of 90
3435 Texas women to be honored for their lifetime achievements; and
3536 WHEREAS, During Elizabeth Nelson's six years at the helm of
3637 Marlin's city government, she has demonstrated both able leadership
3738 and a deep concern for the public interest, and she may indeed
3839 reflect with pride on all she has accomplished in behalf of her
3940 fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
4142 hereby commend Elizabeth J. Nelson on her service as mayor of Marlin
4243 and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and
4344 happiness; and, be it further
4445 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4546 prepared for Ms. Nelson as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4647 House of Representatives and Senate.
