No. 48 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Proud members of the Southwest Movers Association of Texas are gathering in Austin on January 31, 2017, for their Moving/Trucking Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, The Southwest Movers Association is also marking a special milestone in 2017, as it celebrates its 100th year representing the household goods industry in Texas; and WHEREAS, SMA was originally founded as the Texas Warehouse and Transfermen's Association at a meeting held in Fort Worth in August 1917; the meeting was organized by S. J. Westheimer of Houston, who went on to serve as the organization's first president; and WHEREAS, In 1934, the group became known as the Southwest Warehouse and Transfer Association to reflect its expansion to the surrounding states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, and its regional responsibilities continued until 2001, when Texas again became its sole focus; in 1978, the association's offices were moved from Dallas to Austin, and its name was changed to the Southwest Movers Association in 1995; and WHEREAS, Although state and federal laws have evolved with the passing years, the protection of the consumer public, through licensing and insurance regulations, has been and continues to be a core part of the SMA mission; and WHEREAS, Over the past 100 years, the Southwest Movers Association has worked diligently to promote and support the moving industry while safeguarding the needs of the customers it serves, and its members may indeed take great satisfaction in the organization's dedicated efforts and many notable achievements; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby recognize January 31, 2017, as Moving/Trucking Day at the State Capitol and congratulate the Southwest Movers Association on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the association as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
