| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud members of the Southwest Movers Association of |

| 7 | 7 | | Texas are gathering in Austin on January 31, 2017, for their |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Moving/Trucking Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The Southwest Movers Association is also marking a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | special milestone in 2017, as it celebrates its 100th year |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | representing the household goods industry in Texas; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, SMA was originally founded as the Texas Warehouse |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and Transfermen's Association at a meeting held in Fort Worth in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | August 1917; the meeting was organized by S. J. Westheimer of |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Houston, who went on to serve as the organization's first |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | president; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In 1934, the group became known as the Southwest |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Warehouse and Transfer Association to reflect its expansion to the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | surrounding states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Mexico, and its regional responsibilities continued until 2001, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | when Texas again became its sole focus; in 1978, the association's |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | offices were moved from Dallas to Austin, and its name was changed |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | to the Southwest Movers Association in 1995; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Although state and federal laws have evolved with |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the passing years, the protection of the consumer public, through |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | licensing and insurance regulations, has been and continues to be a |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | core part of the SMA mission; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Over the past 100 years, the Southwest Movers |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Association has worked diligently to promote and support the moving |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | industry while safeguarding the needs of the customers it serves, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and its members may indeed take great satisfaction in the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | organization's dedicated efforts and many notable achievements; |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | now, therefore, be it |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | hereby recognize January 31, 2017, as Moving/Trucking Day at the |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | State Capitol and congratulate the Southwest Movers Association on |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it further |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | prepared for the association as an expression of high regard by the |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Texas House of Representatives and Senate. |
