55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Proud members of the Southwest Movers Association of
77 Texas are gathering in Austin on January 31, 2017, for their
88 Moving/Trucking Day at the State Capitol; and
99 WHEREAS, The Southwest Movers Association is also marking a
1010 special milestone in 2017, as it celebrates its 100th year
1111 representing the household goods industry in Texas; and
1212 WHEREAS, SMA was originally founded as the Texas Warehouse
1313 and Transfermen's Association at a meeting held in Fort Worth in
1414 August 1917; the meeting was organized by S. J. Westheimer of
1515 Houston, who went on to serve as the organization's first
1616 president; and
1717 WHEREAS, In 1934, the group became known as the Southwest
1818 Warehouse and Transfer Association to reflect its expansion to the
1919 surrounding states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New
2020 Mexico, and its regional responsibilities continued until 2001,
2121 when Texas again became its sole focus; in 1978, the association's
2222 offices were moved from Dallas to Austin, and its name was changed
2323 to the Southwest Movers Association in 1995; and
2424 WHEREAS, Although state and federal laws have evolved with
2525 the passing years, the protection of the consumer public, through
2626 licensing and insurance regulations, has been and continues to be a
2727 core part of the SMA mission; and
2828 WHEREAS, Over the past 100 years, the Southwest Movers
2929 Association has worked diligently to promote and support the moving
3030 industry while safeguarding the needs of the customers it serves,
3131 and its members may indeed take great satisfaction in the
3232 organization's dedicated efforts and many notable achievements;
3333 now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
3535 hereby recognize January 31, 2017, as Moving/Trucking Day at the
3636 State Capitol and congratulate the Southwest Movers Association on
3737 the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it further
3838 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3939 prepared for the association as an expression of high regard by the
4040 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
