55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Vaccinations play an important role in preventing
77 the contraction and spread of meningococcal disease; more than
88 1,000 such cases occur in the United States each year, and of those
99 persons infected, 10 to 15 percent will die, while another 10 to 20
1010 percent will suffer serious complications, including brain or
1111 kidney damage, loss of limbs, and nervous system problems; and
1212 WHEREAS, There are many different strains, or serogroups, of
1313 meningococcal disease, of which B, C, and Y are the most commonly
1414 seen in the United States, and vaccines can help to provide
1515 protection against all three; additionally, the Centers for Disease
1616 Control and Prevention recommends vaccination against selected
1717 serogroups; and
1818 WHEREAS, Meningococcal disease, which is spread from person
1919 to person during close or lengthy contact, most commonly affects
2020 individuals from ages 16 to 23; because of low vaccination rates
2121 among young people, several outbreaks of meningitis B have occurred
2222 on college campuses around the country in recent years; the CDC
2323 Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that young
2424 adults from ages 16 to 23 consult with a health care professional
2525 about being immunized against serogroup B; and
2626 WHEREAS, Although meningococcal disease is extremely
2727 dangerous, if not fatal, it can be prevented through proper
2828 vaccinations, and a greater awareness of this issue would be
2929 beneficial to the health and well-being of many Texans; now,
3030 therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
3232 hereby recognize the importance of vaccinations in preventing
3333 meningococcal disease and encourage all Texans to learn more about
3434 this vital issue.
