10 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Each year, Big Spring celebrates the holiday season |

11 | 6 | | with a spectacular display featuring more than 100 lighted |

12 | 7 | | poinsettias, and this much-anticipated event has become well known |

13 | 8 | | throughout the Lone Star State and beyond; and |

14 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The Comanche Trail Festival of Lights draws more |

15 | 10 | | than 20,000 visitors annually to view the giant lighted |

16 | 11 | | poinsettias, some up to 150 feet tall, that are placed throughout |

17 | 12 | | Comanche Trail Park; the display includes over one million lights |
---|
18 | 13 | | in total, and guests can view the splendid decorations by car or |
---|
19 | 14 | | from a walking trail; and |

20 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Launched in 1997, the festival was founded by Big |

21 | 16 | | Spring resident Pat Simmons; over the years, the celebration has |

22 | 17 | | enjoyed the support of the city and many dedicated Howard County |

23 | 18 | | volunteers, and it has grown steadily in size and popularity; and |

24 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Enthusiasm for the festival has prompted local |
---|
25 | 20 | | residents to expand the event throughout the city; every December, |
---|
26 | 21 | | many private homes are decorated with illuminated poinsettias, |
---|
27 | 22 | | further contributing to the magical holiday ambiance; and |
---|
28 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Comanche Trail Festival of |
---|
29 | 24 | | Lights has become a West Texas tradition, and citizens of Big Spring |
---|
30 | 25 | | have embraced their community's reputation as a special place to |
---|
31 | 26 | | experience the joys of the season; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
33 | 28 | | hereby designate the city of Big Spring as the Lighted Poinsettia |
---|
34 | 29 | | Capital of Texas; and, be it further |
---|
35 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |

36 | 31 | | 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
