94 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
105 WHEREAS, Each year, Big Spring celebrates the holiday season
116 with a spectacular display featuring more than 100 lighted
127 poinsettias, and this much-anticipated event has become well known
138 throughout the Lone Star State and beyond; and
149 WHEREAS, The Comanche Trail Festival of Lights draws more
1510 than 20,000 visitors annually to view the giant lighted
1611 poinsettias, some up to 150 feet tall, that are placed throughout
1712 Comanche Trail Park; the display includes over one million lights
1813 in total, and guests can view the splendid decorations by car or
1914 from a walking trail; and
2015 WHEREAS, Launched in 1997, the festival was founded by Big
2116 Spring resident Pat Simmons; over the years, the celebration has
2217 enjoyed the support of the city and many dedicated Howard County
2318 volunteers, and it has grown steadily in size and popularity; and
2419 WHEREAS, Enthusiasm for the festival has prompted local
2520 residents to expand the event throughout the city; every December,
2621 many private homes are decorated with illuminated poinsettias,
2722 further contributing to the magical holiday ambiance; and
2823 WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Comanche Trail Festival of
2924 Lights has become a West Texas tradition, and citizens of Big Spring
3025 have embraced their community's reputation as a special place to
3126 experience the joys of the season; now, therefore, be it
3227 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
3328 hereby designate the city of Big Spring as the Lighted Poinsettia
3429 Capital of Texas; and, be it further
3530 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
3631 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
3732 until the 10th anniversary of its designation.
