94 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
105 WHEREAS, For more than four decades, the city of Stamford has
116 played host to the Stamford Art Foundation Western Art Show, the
127 oldest continuously held art show and sale in Texas and the
138 third-oldest event of its kind in the United States; and
149 WHEREAS, First curated in 1974, the Western Art Show was
1510 organized through the efforts of community and business leaders and
1611 prominent ranchers in the Stamford area, all of whom shared an
1712 interest in the promotion and preservation of Western heritage and
1813 culture; early supporters of the show included Western movie stars,
1914 former Texas governors, and many individuals who are enshrined in
2015 the ProRodeo and the National and Texas Cowboy Halls of Fame; and
2116 WHEREAS, Over the course of its history the Stamford Western
2217 Art Show has displayed paintings, drawings, and sculptures from
2318 some of the most famous artists of Texas and the West, among whom
2419 are luminaries of the Cowboy Artists of America organization and
2520 multiple individuals who have been chosen as Texas State Artist by
2621 the Texas Commission on the Arts; and
2722 WHEREAS, This prestigious event is operated by the nonprofit
2823 Stamford Art Foundation, and the show is a broad-based community
2924 initiative that draws on the efforts of the organization's board of
3025 directors as well as an additional 130 or more volunteers; proceeds
3126 from tickets and art sales benefit the West Texas Rehabilitation
3227 Center, which provides outpatient therapy and rehabilitation
3328 services to more than 500 patients daily, regardless of their
3429 ability to pay, from locations in Abilene, San Angelo, and Ozona;
3530 and
3631 WHEREAS, The Western Art Show in Stamford is a prominent
3732 event that pays tribute to the treasured legacy of the American West
3833 and features the premier artists of the genre, and it is indeed
3934 fitting to recognize the community that has been home to this
4035 exciting showcase for more than four decades; now, therefore, be it
4136 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
4237 hereby designate the city of Stamford as the Western Art Show
4338 Capital of Texas; and, be it further
4439 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
4540 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
4641 until the 10th anniversary of its designation.
