86 WHEREAS, The Honorable Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr., former
97 United States senator and secretary of the Department of the
108 Treasury, dedicated his life to public service; and
119 WHEREAS, Born in Mission, Secretary Bentsen graduated from
1210 The University of Texas School of Law and then served his country as
1311 a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945; a recipient of
1412 the Distinguished Flying Cross, he flew 35 missions over Germany,
1513 Romania, and Italy and was shot down twice; he led 600 Allied troops
1614 and guided the operations of 15 bombers, and he attained the rank of
1715 colonel; and
1816 WHEREAS, Secretary Bentsen returned to his hometown after the
1917 war, serving the Rio Grande Valley as Hidalgo County judge until
2018 1948, when he was elected to the first of three terms in the
2119 U.S. House of Representatives; he then enjoyed success in the
2220 private sector before winning election to the U.S. Senate in 1970;
2321 following 22 years in that office, he retired from Congress to
2422 accept President Bill Clinton's nomination as the secretary of the
2523 treasury; and
2624 WHEREAS, Over the course of his long and exceptionally
2725 distinguished career in Congress, Secretary Bentsen played a key
2826 role in the passage of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act,
2927 the creation of Individual Retirement Accounts, and the enactment
3028 of legislation protecting low-income women and children by
3129 providing easier access to health care; his legacy of achievement
3230 earned him numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal of
3331 Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor; he was recognized by
3432 The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for his
3533 work to support advancements in medical care for stroke victims;
3634 and
3735 WHEREAS, Secretary Bentsen passed away in 2006 at the age of
3836 85 after having made vital contributions to this state and nation,
3937 and his tireless endeavors in behalf of his fellow Americans
4038 deserve lasting respect and appreciation; naming the Texas
4139 Workforce Commission Building in the Capitol Complex in his honor
4240 would provide a most fitting tribute to his outstanding
4341 accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
4442 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
4543 hereby direct the Texas Facilities Commission to rename the Texas
4644 Workforce Commission Building the Lloyd M. Bentsen State Office
4745 Building; and, be it further
4846 RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official
4947 copy of this resolution to the chair and executive director of the
5048 Texas Facilities Commission.
