45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Trade between Texas and Mexico plays a vital role in
67 the economic prosperity of the Lone Star State; and
78 WHEREAS, Each year, Texas sends about 36 percent of the
89 state's total exports to Mexico, and in 2015, exports to Mexico
910 totaled nearly $92.5 million; goods exported to Mexico include
1011 computer and electronic products, petroleum and coal products,
1112 chemicals, machinery, and transportation equipment, all of which
1213 are produced by industries that supply hundreds of thousands of
1314 jobs to the Lone Star State; and
1415 WHEREAS, Since the ratification of the North American Free
1516 Trade Agreement in 1994, the export of U.S. goods to Mexico has
1617 risen 325 percent, while imports into the United States from Mexico
1718 have increased 458 percent; in 2012, Americans spent $277.5 billion
1819 for goods from Mexico, and Mexico is America's third-largest
1920 supplier of oil, after Canada and Saudi Arabia; additionally,
2021 nearly half of the tomatoes and two-thirds of the mangoes consumed
2122 in the United States come from Mexico; and
2223 WHEREAS, The importance of this trade to Texas border cities,
23- counties, and businesses is very significant, and disruption to
24- international commerce would be economically damaging; and

2526 WHEREAS, Mexico is the largest trading partner of Texas and

2728 our federal government take proactive steps to strengthen ties with

2930 Texas and the entire nation; now, therefore, be it
3031 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3132 Legislature hereby urge the United States Congress to recognize the
3233 importance of trade between Texas and Mexico and foster
3334 international commerce; and, be it further
35+ RESOLVED, That the federal executive and legislative
36+ branches be urged to fully evaluate the impact of proposed federal
37+ trade policies, legislation, executive orders, and other actions on
38+ Texas-Mexico commerce; and, be it further
3439 RESOLVED, That the chief clerk of the house forward official
3540 copies of this resolution to the president of the United States, to
3641 the president of the Senate and the speaker of the House of
3742 Representatives of the United States Congress, and to all the
3843 members of the Texas delegation to Congress with the request that
3944 this resolution be entered in the Congressional Record as a
4045 memorial to the Congress of the United States of America.
