5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Lee Jackson is retiring as chancellor of the |

6 | 7 | | University of North Texas System at the end of 2017, drawing to a |

7 | 8 | | close a decade and a half of exemplary service to that institution; |
---|

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, A native of Austin, Mr. Jackson grew up in Dallas and |
---|
10 | 11 | | earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Duke |
---|
11 | 12 | | University and a master's in public administration from Southern |
---|
12 | 13 | | Methodist University; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Before his appointment as UNT chancellor, |
---|
14 | 15 | | Mr. Jackson enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career in state and |
---|
15 | 16 | | local government, starting as an assistant to the Dallas city |
---|
16 | 17 | | manager; he served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1977 |
---|
17 | 18 | | to 1987, earning mention on Texas Monthly's "Ten Best Legislators" |
---|
18 | 19 | | list in 1983, and he went on to win election four times as Dallas |
---|
19 | 20 | | County judge; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson joined the UNT System in 2002, at the |
---|
21 | 22 | | beginning of a period of unprecedented growth; under his dynamic |
---|
22 | 23 | | leadership, the system has added a third campus, increased |
---|
23 | 24 | | enrollment and the number of degrees granted annually, and created |
---|
24 | 25 | | new professional programs in engineering, law, pharmacy, and |
---|
25 | 26 | | medicine; he has also overseen the expansion of the UNT Health |
---|
26 | 27 | | Science Center in Fort Worth and celebrated the designation of UNT |
---|
27 | 28 | | by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as one of the |
---|
28 | 29 | | state's emerging research universities and by the Carnegie |
---|
29 | 30 | | Endowment as a Tier One research university; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson has served his professional community as |
---|
31 | 32 | | a board member of the National Association of System Heads and as |
---|
32 | 33 | | chair of the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities and the |
---|
33 | 34 | | Council of Public University Presidents and Chancellors; in |
---|
34 | 35 | | addition, he has served his local community on the boards of the |
---|
35 | 36 | | Dallas Citizens Council and the Dallas Regional Chamber; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Jackson has enjoyed the |
---|
37 | 38 | | love and support of his wife, Margaret, as well as that of his four |
---|
38 | 39 | | children and three grandchildren; and |
---|
39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Lee Jackson's adept and forward-looking leadership |
---|
40 | 41 | | has helped guide the UNT System through a transformative period in |
---|
41 | 42 | | its history, and his many valuable contributions will continue to |
---|
42 | 43 | | resonate in the years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
44 | 45 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Lee Jackson on his retirement as |
---|
45 | 46 | | chancellor of the University of North Texas System and extend to him |
---|
46 | 47 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

48 | 49 | | prepared for Mr. Jackson as an expression of high regard by the |
